Hey all! So I'm back again (used to frequent this comm when I applied year before last). Finishing second year of English MA this year and applying to PhD programs this applicant season. My question to any of you who may know/be interested: Schools with strong focuses in queer theory and sexuality studies? I do queer space and rural space, ( Read more... )

Have you tried making tailored rankings for your needs from http://www.phds.org/ ? That helped me a little.

Question: University of Indiana? I assume you mean the one in Pennsylvania?

I've also heard great things about Brandeis, and am considering applying there for next fall in English grad studies. Thanks for the additional info.

Thanks! I am checking out Brandeis. My partner is applying to a lot of Massachusetts schools for poetry MFAs, so it would be sweet to find programs with queer leanings there.

I second Brandeis because I'm starting there this fall and I'm awesome.

I actually think that program looks really interesting. I got in there for their MA program, but I really need a city. I definitely do not thrive in the rural. There are some programs for which I will make an exception (Indiana, etc.), but I really have to be in love with it.

Thanks for the suggestion though. I may look and see where some of their interesting faculty did their PhDs.

If you have the patience for it, you might want to look at who_got_in entries for the past couples of years to see where folks with particular interests were applying.

If you're interested in space (which I'm guessing you are since you said queer space and rural space), you might want to take a gander at some geography programs as well. Totally different degree program, but there are folks doing literary geography, as well as people working on queer space (UW Seattle leaps to mind) and rural space.

Yes! I do need to look at some critical geography stuff. I'm a little scared that if my interests shift out of space that I'd be screwed, though, whereas in an English department there's room for movement. I just don't know if I know anything much really about geography outside the queer stuff I've read. I am def going to check it out though. Thanks for the UW suggestion - I'll start there.
