If you are only waiting for that one school, and you don't have to consider debating between two, then I would just wait for the "hear-by" date.

Yeah. They're typically more responsive if you e-mail them saying "I've been accepted to X and I want to be able to make a more educated decision after knowing my status at your uni" except in different, polite words.

If you don't need the answer for anything (like to counter another offer) AND you aren't even moving to go to this school, there is really no reason for you to need to know other than impatience. It sucks to wait, but I'm waiting to hear from programs that haven't notified yet and I need to plan a cross-country move if I am accepted--and I am still waiting for the notification deadline. Take a deep breath and be patient.

I can't take the wait anymore either so I fired off a polite email asking if they either could tell me my status or when I would hear. Hopefully they don't mind :)

I, too, only applied to one school. Since I'm won't be weighing several offers, I can sit back and wait for their decision. My problem is that I have no idea if they've 'weeded' my application out along with others and haven't bothered to notify me of this or if they're still considering applications. Others have posted on Grad Cafe that they've emailed their departments, only to get a response that they were rejected weeks earlier. My school is a state school, and probably many peoples 'safety school,' but a perfect fit for me, considering the professors. I did see one entry about a month ago that was an acceptance and I'm wondering now how many other people were accepted but don't post their results, or how many new PhD students the department is taking this year. There's just too many things to worry about, but that's life. I just don't like the idea that universities are becoming like employers- you send off your application (here with a fee), never to be acknowledged.
