Financial Aid for Graduate Schol

Hello everyone,

I am wondering if graduate fellowships/scholarships are based on needs or other factors such as grades and GRE scores?

Thanks.

My teaching fellowship was competitive, so grades, scores, things like that.

It depends entirely on the fellowship. My school has some fellowships that are only given to minority students, for example. There are departmental fellowships that aren't strictly linked to grades so much as how badly the department wants to recruit you -- if they think the extra money will entice you to choose them over other programs. This is in a field where everyone is given tuition reimbursement and a fair stipend, though, so "need" doesn't enter into it since they give everyone enough to live off of.

I'm doing a neuroscience PhD. While there might be unfunded PhDs in the life sciences, I didn't encounter any during my search or application process. Tuition reimbursement and $20K+ annual stipend (depending on cost of living) seems typical.

Also, they are different if you are just applying for your MA or a PHD
