Can you at least get an MFA so teaching is a option? And research the schools carefully. Sometimes these art programs are just cash cows for schools. As someone who used to work advising students about this very issue, I can tell you that you don't need any kind of advanced degree to pursue illustration. All you need is a couple connections and an awesome portfolio. If you need more instruction, try to take a class or two. But please, think very carefully about going that deeply into debt. Not trying to be a downer, but I'm saying this because I made that mistake myself.
thanks! i appreciate the honesty, really. i'm thinking about Savannah College of Art & Design. Maybe I'll just wait and see what kind of financial aid package I get (or don't get!)
MFA is the terminal studio degree, and carries a lot more studio credit hours than a MA does. It would make a lot more sense in the long run to get a MFA (more class time devoted to studio work, better chances of getting a job, etc), so I would recommend going for that sort of degree program.
