Okay, so, SoP word limits: how hard a limit are we generally talking here? If I can't seem to get down under it, if I'm twenty or thirty words over, how big a deal is that? This is probably a silly question but I'm freaking out and I'd appreciate it if someone could tell me to calm down.

I would definitely not worry about the extra 20 words. One of my LORs told me that academics never pay attention to word limits - if you've said what you need to say and you feel good about it, submit and don't stress that the entire admissions committee is going to be whipping out their word counting tool for every single statement of purpose.

I doubt anyone is going to count your words. However, if it's so few words, it probably means there are a few areas you could probably tighten up to get fewer words overall.
