I took the Lit GRE this morning and actually left feeling fairly confident. I could definitely tell my studying paid off. Mostly, I'm just glad to have it over!
I actually thought the theory stuff was pretty light on this test. Maybe like one SuperPOE question (to use the Princeton Review terminology) plus a couple of stand-alone questions.
I also took the lit GRE on Saturday. Due to foolish overconsumption of coffee, I had to get up and visit the bathroom mid-test. Resultingly, I failed to fill in six questions. As frustrating as this was, I felt like I did well overall. I was surprised how much my recent Norton-thumbing paid off. Much of the material felt familiar and a few of the questions even felt like freebies. I was surprised that some of the theory questions were really specific. Not just : "identify the theoretical framework" but : "name the specific thinker that Derrida was responding to in so-and-so essay." Why does it take 6 weeks to grade a scantron? Can somebody please tell me why it takes six weeks to grade a scantron?
Sign, Structure, and Play? It was Levi-Strauss. That was a hard one, even for Derridians. The theory questions in the recent tests have been harder (I think) than the old practice questions.
It may not take 6 weeks. Last year, it only look 3. Most annoying: results from the October exam was available DURING THE MIDDLE OF THE NOVEMBER EXAM.
They had a series of 4 or 5 questions specifically about a selection from the introduction of Orientalism. Then they had their little "what kind of theory is this guy practicing" set of questions. I don't think there was a question asking about Derrida, though he was an answer choice for one of them. The test was surprisingly fun. Damn, I've gone full-on lit nerd.
there might be different versions of the test (though I didn't get that impression from last year), but unless the Derridian scholar who discussed this question with me was completely wrong (unlikely: SSP was the main text of his thesis), there definitely was a question on Derrida on his test last weekend.
