I recommend to take the GRE as soon as you're ready for it, waiting till after you graduate won't help you any, and trying to take it next week won't either. As what other people said, taking the year or two is a personal decision. I wasn't mature enough to start grad school, which I blame the school system for allowing me to start kindergarten too early, I was able to do the academic work I just wasn't emotionally ready and never caught up. But... anyways, yeah if you feel you need to save money or you just need an academic vacation, that's up to you. The school's will surely not condemn you for it, but work experience is not at all necessary.

I got my BA in Literature/Writing in 2000, just took my GRE last October, and will be enrolling to get my MFA in Creative Writing in the fall. The head of the department said one of the things he liked about me was that my interests and background (including my work experience) were diverse.

I'm glad I waited because most schools want writers to have more life experience before going for the MFA. Also, my teaching experience gave me a wider, more sophisticated vocabulary and a better grasp of how to take standardized tests.
