So I've lurked here for almost a year now, but having gotten my GRE score report I've gotten up the nerve to join. Now I have a raft of questions, re: AWA score, recommendations, languages, suggestions for further action. I'm applying, next year, to PhD programs in 18th century European intellectual/cultural history.

3) The languages: French is really important. The others depend on the specific area you want to study. I'm in a history PhD program, and the early modernists only "need" two languages, and French and German seem to be the standard. If you were studying Russia, I imagine the French would be very helpful there as well. Lots of scholarship is in German, but that really depends on your field. I think it was 630 on one, 680 on the other. YMMV, though.

3. I was just wondering if you took language classes in your university or if are teaching yourself to read the languages because as you have so many listed (which is great)!

I'm a native Russian speaker, did a few years each of Latin and German in high school, studied French in college. I probably wouldn't get very far in self-study--not enough self-discipline.

(Thanks for the quick responses, everyone. Wow.)
