I didn't have the chance to visit any schools, but two of our prospectives are coming for a visit this coming Sun/Mon/Tues. The department will actually just be getting back from a research trip & the prospectives are coming early due to scheduling issues (our normal admit weekend is a few weeks later), so things are more disorganized than usual, but on Sunday current grad students will show them around during the day, then we have a nice dinner out with our profs/current grads/prospectives that evening. Monday, they sit in on our seminars & get a full fledged tour of our campus, facilities, library & resources, then we're hosting a dinner for them at a current student's apt. Tuesday they head home.

It's informal & designed to give prospectives a taste of what life is like in our department, at our school, and in our area. They'll be staying with current grad students while they're here. If you're concerned about what to bring, ask the department what sort of events you'll be going to. Our admit visits are supposed to be casual

i visited 3 programs last year. all of the visits were lovely but very hectic. all of the schools kept me quite busy and by the end of each visit i was throughly exhausted. everyone will want to talk to you and/or at you. everyone will ask you what your areas of interest are and whether you have any projects in mind. graduate students tend to ask how seriously you are considering the program ( ... )

I never sat in on graduate seminars when I visited. There are lots of old posts in this community about what to wear. And I stayed in a hotel. You likely will NOT be living with a professor. Mostly I met individually with professors and had some group lunches and dinners that included grad students and faculty. Remember, you're not just making sure you fit in with the faculty but also with your peers.
