Well, I've never heard of English PhD programs interviewing, but some might. Are you asking because you've been asked to come in for one, or just to be prepared? I would treat it like a job interview - they may ask you why you chose the field, or the school, or your specialization. And familiarize yourself with the recent work of the profs at that institution who you'd like to work with, stuff like that...

Northwestern and Emory interview. I can't think of other programs.

From the looks of people at whogotin who interviewed at Northwestern last year, it's very informal.

Yes, I was thinking of Northwestern specifically because they mentioned it. I was not sure if I should assume it more common than just those two. But that is good to hear.

Like... how it is informal? There doesn't seem to be a difference between formal and informal! :(
