1. I started my major late (I did it in three semesters, although I studied abroad a year before that and took a couple classes relating directly to my major) and felt I wasn't "done" with it and wanted to study one of its fields more in-depth ( ... )

What is your major, by the way? I was just interested because you said that there are only a few schools that offer the program.

5. I am almost positive I won't get in. I really don't have a fighting chance. I know I am a poor candidate and not suited for grad school. *shrug* I'm applying way too early but as I explained above, it's kind of my only chance.

Believe in yourself! At times I feel like this too, but everyone has *something* to add to a program.

I applied last year.

1) Looked up top schools which had professors with similar research interests

2) Yes

3) Yes, it's just easier this way

4) Department websites

5) I wasn't terribly confident, but I did.

1. A semester of angsting between two majors led to a revelation that if I am to go to graduate school and start a career that'd I stick to for more than 5 years, I'd have to go with Classics, not Urban/Regional Planning ( ... )

Oh...okay, I didn't read #1 right...I looked up programs with professors that wrote stuff that I was interested in/were similar to my research interests...thus only 6 schools in this round of applications.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you get your HP degree? I got my undergrad degree in HP, and am hopefully continuing on to get my masters in it.

I am finishing my HP degree at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA. There is no Master's degree in it at our university, because there is the feeling that it would take away from the rather strong undergraduate program (which is essentially a master's program in the way it is structured and run...it's really refreshing to do such hands on and advanced work!)

Where did you get your degree?

Tell me more about your plans! I am still very interested in HP, even if I am not going into it (it's really supplemented my other major and it's given me a lot of hands-on group and individual work at a graduate-like setting).

1. How did you guys decide which programs you wanted to apply to?
I trawled websites... for hours and hours and hours

2. Are the programs related to your undergraduate (or other) degrees?
Yep, same major

3. Did/Are you apply/ing straight out of college? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes, I'm ready for a new challenge... right now

4. How did you go about researching your programs? (e.g. researched online, visited the campus, asked professors, etc.)
On the internet

5. How confident are you that you will get into the program of your dreams?
I'm not... at all, but I have to at least try, right?

1. I'm geographically limited, so that was my first criterion. Once I had a list of all the programs I could theoretically commute to, I did website research to eliminate programs I thought I wouldn't like.
2. It's the same as one of my undergrad degrees (I had more than one major).
3. No, because I decided too late last year to apply for this fall and also had some personal family reasons to not be in school right now and especially next semester.
4. A lot of online research.
5. Not at all. I don't think anyone can really be confident of that. The process is too random and competitive for that. But I have reached the point where I am confident that I deserve to get in to pretty much every place I applied. I know I have a strong application in every regard - but that doesn't mean I feel at all sure that I'll get in, even to my backups. I can only hope, though....
