3.0?? What did you do?!? Anyways, you should be fine. Don't worry too much about it. No one takes the writing section seriously. As long as you show that you can write in your SoP, this will only be a very minor negative on your application.

I agree. I didn't prepare for the AW and got a 6.0, and my essays weren't long at all. If you write too much, you might end up rambling. The key is economy, structure, and relevant examples.

I had a bit of a similar problem. I scored great on Q/V, however I got a 3.5 on the writing! I attributed this low score to many things: 1.) not preparing for the AW at all, 2. ) not having written anything except email essay for 5 months, and 3.) not following a standard format. (Note, I even paid the 55 bux to have them regrade it (score came back the same). With an exceptionally busy semester I had no time to retake the test (and let alone prepare for it ( ... )

The analytical writing section basically measures how closely you follow the essay format the GRE is looking for. It doesn't measure your ability to think critically, and adcoms know this. Don't stress too much. You will have ample opportunity to demonstrate your writing ability in the rest of your application.
