Ugh, just took my first actual GRE and I absolutely choked on on the quantitative. I had a mini panic attack when I got to a term I didn't recognize, and then couldn't finish the section. Since I had no option but to send this score to my first choice school, which needs everything in by the end of the month and I can't take the GRE again this ( Read more... )

I got a 560 on my Q so I sure hope middling quantitative scores are okay for humanities (Classics, here). Everyone I've talked to both on the internet and off says I should be okay, and verbal matters more and so on. I am sure you'll be fine. Oh, and you're not a freak for doing much better on verbal :) Good job!

For Humanities and Social sciences, you should be just fine if you scored high on the verbal and got a mediocre score on the quantitative section. When I applied for History last year, I got into several schools with a low quat. score. Besides, the other elements in your dossier matter a lot more than your test scores. Hope this helps! Best of luck!

Well, it will matter for social sciences with a quantitative bent, like economics. But in general, you're right.

OP - Don't stress. You'll be fine.

It really depends on the school. The top programs in my field expect at least 1450 overall, but that could just be my field.

Are you serious? I'm not trying to be dismissive, but even at many of the top schools I've heard of that number hovering more around 1350...1450 seems really high...

I just look at the averages for each year; they don't actually come out and say it. But I have also heard from my Professors who went to those schools.

I will also note, though, that it seems also to depend on the year, given that the averages change. But that is the trend I see (750+ on the verbal, with 700+) on the quantitative.

I think your case, you can get away with a 570 on your Quant. I don't it's that low. Again it really depends on the score, some schools just want you to break a 1000, while others rely on averages from past years. Either way I think you're in the clear. Remember, the GRE is one of the many things that is being considered for admissions, it's not like the LSAT where if you get below the average you're screwed.

One of my friends who's applying to English grad programs was told by her professors not even to study for the math because (at least at this program) they don't take the quant score into consideration. I don't know anything about Middle Eastern studies, but I'm assuming you don't use much math or stats, yeah? So it's probably the same for you. I'd just be worried about getting at least a 1,000, which you did!
