English PhD Top Tier - Verbal GRE?

This community is great, by the way.  So, time to be candid.  Are you a student in a top-tier English PhD program? If so what was your GRE Verbal score?  Or are you applying to English PhD programs and have heard what's good?  720 - high end, low end, average for the best of the best programs?  Thanks.  And yes I know everything else matters and ( Read more... )

I don't know how you're imagining "tiers," but a friend was accepted to two overall top-20 (and higher in his field) programs in English with a 630.

Folk wisdom 'round here is 700+. But who the hell knows.

I'm about to start at an amazing school (Johns Hopkins) and was accepted at two others (NYU and Indiana): my GRE Verbal was 740. The first time I took it I got a 680, and was strongly advised to take it again if I thought I could score above a 700.
