So, I carried off a minor miracle today. In a rare moment (the only time?) in the six years I've been with my employer, I finally got to: conceive, design, resource, implement, measure, and now report on a project in its entirety. And it's only the start of a fairly aggressive campaign I'm pressing for bicycle commuting at my office. Hehe, first a ( Read more... )

I was good yesterday as well, and got my bike out and sorted in anticipation of my new job (Which is a more sensible distance away for cycling)

If you want to calculate some CO2 figures, here are some unofficial numbers I'm using until I find something better - weighted to American norms, which may be reasonably reflective of UK norms in public transit contexts:

  • Bus: 0.112 lbs C02 per passenger-mile.
  • Light rail: 0.089 lbs CO2 per passenger-mile. - For convenience, I use this rate to estimate electric bus system emissions level
  • Car: 19.6lbs. CO2 per (US) gallon. US fleet average (04 CAFE) is 24.1mpg. Reality is probably worse; the UK fleet average is probably better.

  • By now, there should be UK DEFRA info available, I think I saw a website somewhere. Here it is, but may be a black box calculator.

Hey, my car does somewhere between 50 and 60 mpg (UK gal) so I figure it is more like half your figure.

But I am looking forward to not having to sit in it for ages every day. To celebrate, I am off to the seaside, which is about to involve sitting in a car for ages and ages.
