Having tasted Swiss wine, I'm not surprised that it is not a roaring export success :-)

I have to ask where you sampled these wines. After all, I have to confess I have tasted some extraordinarily good Swiss wines - but these mountain people seem to hold to the Continental tradition of keeping the best for oneself, exporting one's worst.

There was also a severe decline in quality a few years ago when the federal government intervened with incentives for increased production for export ... and swimming pools were being rented to contain the product. :-/

The small production wineries with Gamay and Pinot varieties tend to be acceptable, even quite good, but rarely make it to export after locals buy up most of the stock ( ... )

Bought in Geneva when I was there years ago (in the 15 to 20 year range). They were, I have to admit, cheap (by Swiss standards).
