Okay, so there's going to be a bunch of gradient maps and masking in this tutorial, so prepare yourself accordingly aha step 0 is the base so here we are :)

1.
Use the polygon lasso tool and clip around Taylor's skin (arms, neck, and face (including lips + teeth).  Create a gradient map and make the color on the left pure black (#000000) and the one on the right a medium grey (#aeacaa).  Set this layer to screen at 75% opacity.  Duplicate this layer and change the colors to #d1d1d1 (left) and #f9ecd7 (right), with the layer set to multiply at 100% opacity.

2.
Use the lasso tool again and select just her lips and create a color fill layer using #850515, with soft light at 100%.

3.
Next, select her shirt and create a new gradient map (#000000 left and #955b6b right), screen at 100%.  Duplicate the layer, change the colors to #cda6af left and #a40a23 right, changing the layer setting to muplity.  Duplicate the multiply layer, leaving everything the same :)

4.
Mask Taylor's hair and create a gradient map (#000000 left and #946a4b right), screen at 100%.  Duplicate the layer, changing the colors to #b5b5b5 left and #f9ff52 right, and switching the later setting to (you guessed it) multiply.

5.
Somehow, mask everything other than Taylor (i.e., the background).  You can do this by hand, or by holding control + shift and selecting the hair mask, skin mask, and shirt mask.  Go through with the polygon lasso tool (make sure it's set to "add to selection"), and go over the "seems": where the skin meets the shirt, hair meets face, etc.  This ensures that background colors remains in the background, and not on Taylor's body :)

6.
Currently, it should look like Taylor is being selected.  Hold control + shift + i and it will invert your selection.  Create a new gradient map with the colors #c3c3c3 left and #17d977 right, with the layer setting as overlay at 100%.  Duplicate the layer and simply change the layer setting to multply :)

7.
Create a color fill layer with #f7dbdb, and press control + i.  Change the layer to multiply, then use a feather brush and color over Taylor's cheek, neck, and the "shadowy" part of her arm to add some blush aha ;p

The hard part is done!  You should have something like this:

8.
Create a gradient layer with the colors #000000 left and #c3c3c1 right.  On the main settings, change the angle to 110.  Set this layer to soft light and 50%.  Create a hue/saturation level and change the saturation on the main/master colors to +25.

9.
Texture time!  Use this texture, by unknown (though I'm pretty sure it's a lumsx texture desaturated and maybe flipped) set it to soft light at 50%.  Add this texture next, by tinebrella, and set it to screen at 100%.  Duplicate the tinebrella texture and leave the layer settings the same :)

10.
Finally, add another hue/saturation level and change the saturation on the main/master colors to +25 and the layer opactity to 50%

Tada! \^o^/  Here are some other icons I made using this technique:

+ the category set in the character20n20 batch :)
