Mama agrees. I have no idea where you heard that "age limit" on kimono, but it's probably about as accurate as rules about not wearing white shoes after Labor Day. I don't know a single person in Japan who thinks twice about middle-aged or even married women wearing furisode, so I'd say wear what you want! Probably the only people who would actually care about you being "too old" to wear a furisode would be the type of people who would choke on their bile at the thought of Disney or polka-dot kimonos as well. You've already professed liking "modern trends" in kimono, so you might as well go the whole way.
Wow! Old post is old! lol I love both of my Mamechiyo books. =D Kimono ala mode is more coordinate oriented where as Mamechiyo's Kimono Modern is a bit more how to.

in Japan, it is also very Mamechiyo and comes with a sewing pattern.
