The state of Appalachian studies

Feb 09, 2006 13:53

I was rejected again from Appalachian State this time from what i call for political reasons. The Appalachian Studies field is totally mainstream with people research that does affect anyone. My research in libertion theology and base communities might have been to radical for them. Academics cannot be seperate from activism.

get your foot in the door....play ball....then, gradually, begin to incorporate your research interests into more mainstream papers (i.e., triangulate as much as possible).

I understand your frustration. In my doctoral program, everyone is a worshipper at the idol of quantitative methods....so, I have to do the statistical analyses, THEN incorporate my interviews, etc.....

It feels like selling out at first, but you have to remember that the ends justify the means sometimes.
