Stranded Side Story ;; Minho and Nickhun

--

Nickhun was a popular child. His family was well off, he was very cute, and very friendly. He was well known throughout the town for being one of the sweetest boys ever.

“Come on Nickhun! We’re gonna be late! I don’t want to kneel again!” A little girl about eight years old stomped her foot, waiting for the other boy to catch up. “I’m coming, I’m coming!”

“Just because Teacher likes you the most doesn’t mean she won’t punish me!” Nickhun smiled and hurried his pace. They pair ran past a boy with his head down, walking at a much slower pace. Nickhun didn’t recognize him so he stopped and turned back to look.

“Nickhun!”

“Go on ahead! I’ll catch up!” He turned back and ran up to the other boy. “Hi! I’m Nickhun. I haven’t seen you before. Are you new?” The other boy looked up shocked. His eyes were rather large, and he was clearly scared.

“I... I’m new... we just moved here...” Nickhun flashed him a smile and grabbed his hand. “Hurry up! Teacher makes you kneel if you’re late, and there’s lots of splinters on the floor!” Nickhun ran off, dragging the boy behind him.

That was the first time Minho met Nickhun.

--

“Class, this is Minho. He just moved to this town, so please be nice to him.” There were curious glances from the kids as they strained to see him. Minho seemed very shy, not being able to meet eyes with anyone. “Take the empty seat next to Nickhun. Nickhun! Raise your hand please!” His hand shot into the air, accompanied by a huge smile.

Minho shyly made his way over to the seat and sat down. “I hope you like it here,” he said. The teacher rapped her ruler on her desk to get their attention.

--

It was lunch time. Many of the children had finished their lunches and were on the playground already, laughing and screaming.

“He’s kind of weird. He doesn’t really say much. My mommy said to stay away from him because of his family. She told me they were bad.”

“That’s not really nice...” Nickhun said as his eyes traveled over to Minho, who was eating his lunch by himself. “I don’t care what your mom says. It’s too mean to leave people out.” He grabbed his lunch and shuffled over to Minho, despite the other girl’s protests.

“Hey! What are you having for lunch?” He asked as he sat down beside him. “A sandwich... without the crust. And some fruit. We have an apple tree in our backyard.” He held up the bright, shiny apple for Nickhun to see. “Wow. That looks delicious.”

“You can have it. I can pick one when I get home,” Minho mumbled, holding it out for the other boy to take.

“Really? Are you sure?” Minho nodded as the other boy took it. “Thanks so much! You know what? Let’s be best friends from now on okay?” Minho looked up completely surprised. “Really?”

“Really, really!”

--

Years passed and the two were nearly inseparable. Nickhun grew up to be a handsome man, and Minho wasn’t lacking in the looks department either. Nickhun was Minho’s saving grace, when things became unbearable at home.

Nickhun opened his window after hearing the rocks being thrown at it. He stuck his head out of his window to see Minho standing in his yard with his hands on his hips. “Trouble at home again? I’ll go get the door.” Nickhun disappeared inside to reappear at the door.

“You wouldn’t believe it. He’s just getting worse and worse now ever since my mom left him.” Nickhun nodded apologetically. It wasn’t his fault, but he just couldn’t stand to see his best friend like that.

“You know you’re always welcome to stay here. My parents love you.” Minho laughed and nodded. “I know. But you’ve done so much for me already. I couldn’t intrude.”

--

The sun shone without mercy on that hot day. Minho worked for Nickhun’s dad in the lumber yard, moving lumber and helping to build and repair ships that docked in the port. Minho knew his way around a ship pretty well.

“What would I do without you, Minho.” Nickhun’s dad patted him on the back and smiled at him as Minho wiped some sweat away from his forehead. “You’d have to hire someone else to be your slave.” He let out a laugh and squeezed Minho’s shoulder. “You’ve done enough for today. Go on.” Minho bowed and popped his neck before leaving.

After Nickhun finished school, he replaced the elementary class teacher as she was getting too old to keep up with the kids anymore. To say that the kids loved him was an understatement. Minho stuck his head inside the classroom during lunch and smiled as Nickhun peeled a girl from his leg.

“I’m sorry, but I can’t marry you right now. Wait till you’re older and see if you still like me then.”

“But I don’t wanna wait! I wanna marry you now!” Minho chuckled as he stepped inside holding two lunches. “Marriage proposal again? That’s the third time this week.” Nickhun laughed as he sat back down at his desk. “I know. I’m so popular with the ladies. I have to beat them off with a stick.” Minho put the lunches down and pulled up a chair.

Minho opened up his lunch and took out an apple, breathing hot air onto it before rubbing it on his shirt. “Nice apple for the teacher?” Nickhun rolled his eyes but took the apple nonetheless. “You’re so cheesy. What is wrong with you?”

--

“Goddamit! You’re so fucking useless around here! Why the fuck are you even here? Taking up my space, using up all of my goddamn money! You should’ve left with her! I don’t know why the hell I’m stuck with an ingrate like you!” Minho sighed. He was drunk again. And this time, he was angrier and throwing things around.

--

There was a knock on his door early in the morning. He opened the door to see Nickhun’s parents standing there with worried expression on their faces. “Is Nickhun here?” Minho shook his head. “No. He’s not. Why? Is something wrong?” His parents looked at each other before looking back at Minho.

“He’s gone. We don’t know. All we found was this note in his room.” They handed him a small scroll with a picture of a clock on it. The word “Heartbeat” was written across it in bold letters.

--

Months passed by, and the entire town mourned the loss of Nickhun. They searched for him every day, Minho always looking for him the longest and sighing heavily when the searches turned up nothing. His life felt so unbearably empty now. He felt like he was missing a part of himself.

--

When Minho came home one night, his father was beyond impossibly drunk. The only difference was, there was a woman with him. A woman that sat calmly in their living room, sipping a drink like she owned the place.

“There he is. There’s my goddamn son. Took your damn sweet time coming home.” His father teetered dangerously on his feet. “Who... are you?”

“You can take his soul. In exchange for me living forever. You can have his soul and do whatever the hell you want with it.” Minho rolled his eyes. Now he was spewing nonsense. The woman cocked a head at him, clearly amused.

“You’d sell your own son’s soul for immortality?” He nodded furiously and grabbed onto a chair for support. “And what do you think about this Minho?” Minho was shocked. What in the world was she talking about? His dad went into another rage about how useless he was, but this time, brought Nickhun and his mother into it. Minho saw red as he punched his father across the face.

“I don’t give a damn anymore!”

“So be it.” The woman smiled and raised her glass to him before he saw nothing but black.

--

It took him a few months to get used to being on the Lucifer. The captain, Onew, had explained everything to him as he woke up disoriented on the ship. It was a lot to digest, but he was still feeling bitter about his life. Everything that was good had left him. And now he was on a god forsaken ship in some fantasy land.

The crew of the Lucifer came and went as their punishments were finished, or when they died trying to escape. Minho found comfort in Onew’s company, the only steady company he had since Nickhun disappeared.

“Captain... how did you end up on the Lucifer?” He asked one night while both of them were standing by the steering wheel. After Onew told his story, Minho felt a stronger connection between the two. Both had been damned by their father’s actions, but Minho felt even sorrier for the other man.

--

It took a while until they found another steady crew member for the Lucifer. His name was Kim Kibum, and he had some problems listening to authority. When they found him lying on the deck, Onew grabbed his contract before opening it up to read. “Interesting...” He said to himself.

Kibum, or Key, was not an easy person to get along with it seemed. He was picky, easily disgusted by things, but he could definitely work some magic with his hands, and Minho had to admit, his inventions were nothing less than genius.

They clashed for a while, Key making fun of how quiet he was all the time and talking nonstop about things Minho didn’t care for. It was an accident when Minho crushed their lips together to make him stop talking. An accident he never regretted.

--

He started to notice things about the captain. He started to notice his behaviors, the way he talked when he was angry, the way he stared off into the distance when he was thinking. He was slowly becoming an open book for Minho to read, and his story was interesting to say the least.

--

He met Taemin for the first time when he found him walking curiously around the dock. He seemed so small, and so frail. But his attitude was nothing of the sort. Key took a shining to him immediately as he explained his situation, handing over his scroll to Onew to read. They shook hands as Taemin clutched his book.

Key later made him a monocle that connected to the book. No one understood the mechanics of the book like Taemin did though, and after some tweaking, he made it so that he could record his observations directly to the book and look through them later.

As time went on, Minho never thought he’d feel so protective over that boy.

--

The first time they met again was at the sky port. None of them had ever been before, Onew choosing to call resupply ships out to their location via messenger bird. They all explored the town, being told to meet at the inn for dinner.

Minho came across the weapons shop and decided to take a look around. As he stepped inside though, he saw the last person he thought he’d ever see again.

“Oh my god... Minho?” Minho was silent. There he was, standing in front of him. He looked just like he did all those years ago.

“Nickhun?”

--

“Minho! Let me explain!” Minho was furious. He ignored the pleas from the other man as he stomped his way down the street. “Minho! Please!” Minho whipped around with fire in his eyes. “Why? Why the hell should I let you explain? You disappeared on me without a word! Without a word to your family! To anyone!” Nickhun’s expression fell.

“It’s complicated Minho. Please. Please understand me.” Minho’s anger and resolve broke when he saw the pleading look on his face. Minho closed his eyes and lowered his head. “I missed you.” Nickhun sighed and pulled his best friend into a hug. “I miss you too Minho. I missed you too.”

--

While they were docked at the sky port, Minho spent as much time as he could with Nickhun. They caught up on the lost years in a matter of days. When Minho came into the shop one day though, Nickhun had a surprise for him.

“Here. Take it. I have one too.” Nickhun handed him a ring on a chain. Minho saw the matching one on around Nickhun’s neck and turned around to let him put it on for him. “Thanks. It’s nice.” Nickhun nodded.

“I’ve been tinkering with it too. Just rub the ring a few times and say my name if you want to talk to me.” Minho narrowed his eyes and stepped outside of the shop for a moment, doing what he was told. The ring vibrated for a moment and started to glow. “Cool huh?” He heard Nickhun’s voice echo from it.

“Yeah. It’s pretty cool.”

--

The two of them sat next to each other admiring the night sky. Minho’s hand was absentmindedly playing with the ring on his necklace. Nickhun smiled a bit before turning to the other man and watching his fingers play with the ring.

“That was a gift from Time, you know. For good behavior. He’s a good guiding god... sometimes.” Minho chuckled. “Better than mine.” Nickhun’s expression turned sad as he rolled over onto his stomach next to Minho. “It sucks huh? To have to give up your soul like that.” Minho was quiet. It wasn’t his choice, well technically it was.

“You had a choice didn’t you? Whether or not to give it up.” Minho turned his head to look Nickhun in the eyes. “It didn’t really matter much to me after you disappeared.” Nickhun hung his head in shame. He wished so hard he could’ve told Minho where he was going.

“What about you? What did you have to give up?” Nickhun swallowed before looking down with a small grin on his face. He turned back to look at Minho’s gentle eyes.

“Time required for us to give up the thing we cherished most in our hearts.” Minho froze. It couldn’t be.

“So I had to give you up.”

--

The two crews stood across from each other, shaking hands jovially. “Good luck to you Jinki. It was good seeing you again.”

“Likewise Jay. It’s always good to see you.” The crew of the Lucifer and the crew of the Heartbeat were good friends. Nickhun and Minho shook hands and hugged.

“See you soon?”

“Yeah. I’ll see you soon.”
