Entry Nine - Without a Soul

--

Jonghyun was dead exhausted when he fell onto the soft bed upstairs in the inn. “Why am I so tired?” He muttered into the pillow. He felt a body fall onto the bed beside him and pulling him into an embrace. “Because you haven’t slept in months. How long as it been now? Eight months? Now that you’re off the Lucifer, you should be able to get some sleep.” He chuckled into Onew’s chest.

“I think I’ll take a coma. Be back later.” He closed his eyes and almost fell asleep immediately. Onew chuckled this time. “Good night.”

--

When Jonghyun woke up the next morning to chirping birds and sunlight on his face, Onew was already gone. He groaned, wondering how long he’d slept before getting out of bed and heading to the bathroom to freshen up. He wandered downstairs, following the smell of food to see the captain sitting at a table with Doojoon, pouring over maps.

Doojoon was standing just a little bit too close to Onew for Jonghyun’s taste, using one hand to support himself on his shoulder while pointing at different things on the maps. Onew nodded, his eyes following wherever he pointed.

The loud growl from his stomach pulled him from his thoughts as he sat down at the bar to order some breakfast. “Good morning, Jonghyun. Slept well last night?” Key said brightly. He sat down next to him at the bar and ordered some food as well.

“You bet. I forgot how wonderful it was to sleep.” He turned around to see Onew smiling at him. He gave him a short wave as Doojoon looked up and looked over to Jonghyun. “Lucky bastard,” Doojoon said under his breath. Onew rolled his eyes. “Don’t tell me you’re still bitter about me rejecting you.”

“Oh please. I stopped being bitter after that one drinking bet where you lost all your winter clothes to me.”

--

Both crews stood at the edge of the table where their two captains sat. “Doojoon thinks he knows where another piece of the bracelet is. This one will be a joint exploration with cooperation between both crews.” The two groups of people looked at each other before smiling and nodding.

“This right here,” he said pointing at a seemingly random spot on the map, “is what we call Dead Man’s Range. The clouds there never move, and never lift over the mountain range. There are constant snow storms and most likely monsters we’ve never seen before.”

“What makes you think a piece of the bracelet is there?” Taemin asked while flipping through his book again. “Stories of people who have explored there and made it out to tell the tale. There’s a story about something shining on a pedestal that none of them can seem to touch because of an invisible barrier around it. Shaped like a heart.” Onew nodded. There were six pieces to the bracelet all together. A square, circle, star, butterfly, and two hearts. One small one, and one big one. He had four of them, and once he got this piece, he would only need one more.

“It’ll take quite a while to get there. It’s on the other side of the World,” Taemin said glancing over the maps. “So it’s best we leave as soon as possible. The trip there, assuming we have favorable conditions should take around three or four months at most. We can stock and resupply at the port there before tackling Dead Man’s Range.” Everyone around the table nodded.

“Make sure you guys are well stocked before we leave. Get any last preparations done. We set sail in three hours.”

--

“Are you sure you’ll be okay by yourself?” Onew asked Jonghyun in front of the inn. “Yeah. I kinda got this place figured out by now. I’m probably going to visit Nickhun and them another time before heading back to the ship.” Onew nodded. He felt sort of guilty leaving Jonghyun by himself like that, be he had to oversee the ship preparations. The Lucifer was a little bit battered, and he had to check the repairs he commissioned yesterday.

“Alright. Don’t get too lost.” He pressed a kiss to Jonghyun’s forehead before turning and leaving with a wave. Jonghyun watched his retreating back and sighed before looking up and down the street. Which way was the shop again?

--

“Back again? So soon?” Nichkun said with a laugh as Jonghyun’s face popped into his store. He laughed a little bit before shaking his head. “We’re leaving in a few hours. I just wanted to see you guys another time in case I don’t make it back alive.” Nickhun nodded, pushing himself up off the counter.

“Risky business this pirating stuff. Things were easier in the New World. If you fell overboard, there was still a chance you could live.” Both of them laughed. “You’re from the New World too?” Jonghyun asked. “You could say that. Minho and I have been around since the beginning of the New World.” Jonghyun nodded slowly. Did nobody age anymore in the Old World?

“Sad story, Minho. His dad sold his son’s soul in exchange for immortality. Minho was bound to the Lucifer until his father died in what seems like a tragic accident.” Jonghyun raised an eyebrow. “Aren’t you supposed to sell your own soul for eternity? Or whatever else you want?” Nickhun chuckled. The bell to his shop tinkled as more people came in. Nickhum went to greet them but his jaw dropped as he suddenly bowed low. Jonghyun turned around, his mind still on his question when he turned around.

“Not unless you don’t have one. Didn’t Onew tell you? No one on the Lucifer has a soul. You sign it over to Fate and what’s done is done.” He came face to face with angels and froze. The one who answered his question tucked his wings in and in a brief flash of light made them disappear.

“Captain Yunho of the Mirotic. Pleasure to meet you.” He extended his hand out with a slight smile. Jonghyun gingerly reached a hand out to shake his. “You’d think he’d keep his crew informed about these things. But I suppose you’re a little bit special so...” Jonghyun was even more confused now.

The angel next to him whispered something in Yunho’s ear, whose eyes went wide after listening. “So,” he said turning back to Jonghyun. He pressed a finger to Jonghyun’s forehead. There was a loud resounding ping. He grinned. “Oh the irony.”

“What are you talking about?” He batted the other man’s hand away from his face. “Seems you still have a soul, Jonghyun. Are you a healer?” Jonghyun was taken aback.

“Yes... but only recently.”

“You have angel blood in you. Which means Fate has only one thing in store for you. Do you know how someone becomes an angel?” Jonghyun shook his head while Nickhun shook his head at Yunho, who ignored him.

“There are three things. You have to be able to heal. You have to have a soul. And you have to die saving someone you love.” Yunho wiggled three fingers while Jonghyun’s eyes widened in shock. “Think about it for a little bit. I hope your voyage goes safely.” All of the crew of the Mirotic had their eyes on him before the disappeared out of the shop.

“Jonghyun...” Nickhun said from behind him. He didn’t seem to hear him as the cogs in his mind tried furiously to understand what he was just told. “Wait. So... I’m supposed to be an angel? Which means... I’m... going to die saving someone?” Nickhun sighed. “Not for just anyone. The person you love.”

Realization hit him. The captain. Onew was going to be in mortal peril, and Jonghyun was going to die trying to save him. Nickhun squeezed his shoulder, trying to comfort him. “Fate is a cruel mistress. That’s why everyone always takes pity on the crew of the Lucifer.”

“But... what if you can heal but you don’t have a soul?” His thoughts wandered to Taemin as his eyes turned toward Nickhun. “Do you know? What happens?” Nickhun pursed his lips, thinking about his answer.

“I believe the same thing happens. But you become a fallen angel instead. The wings are black instead of white and they’re a little bit weaker than true angels. But there hasn’t been a fallen angel in centuries.”

--

Jonghyun was almost late getting back to the Lucifer. He boarded the ship and was immediately met by Roo who nudged his arm, wanting to be petted. “Took you long enough. Be useful will you? Carry this down below.” He was handed a few heavy boxes from Key. He turned and headed down below the deck, the smell of food wafting from the boxes. He turned into the kitchen and placed them down with the others.

Key hurried past the kitchen. The boxes he was carrying were making loud clanging noises. Probably more supplies for him to tinker with his inventions. Minho poked his head into the kitchen where Jonghyun was standing.

“The captain wants to see you.”

--

Onew was on the deck, directing a small task crew on where to put things. “Jonghyun!” He said with a smile as soon as the other man came into view. Jonghyun was silent and his expression was still solemn as his eyes with with Onew’s.

“Is something wrong?” He asked worriedly, noting the expression on the other boy’s face. Jonghyun shook his head and forced a smile on his face. “You wanted to see me?” Onew looked confused for a moment before it came to him.

“Oh yeah! Come to my office later. I want to see what you look like in the ceremonial uniform.”

--

Everyone was busy getting last minute preparations done. Doojoon walked into their ship, laughing as he avoided a moving box that almost crashed into him. “You guys get a shiny new hull? That’s something I haven’t seen before.” Onew and Doojoon shook hands another time and hugged.

“I’m glad to say my crew will be at home in the cold weather. All this heat is just absolutely terrible for us.” Doojoon fanned himself and let out a dramatic sigh. “Did you guys get new winter clothes?” Onew nodded as he jerked his thumb in a direction. “First thing we did when we landed.”

Doojoon looked around the deck for a moment, spotting Taemin in the crow’s nest, flipping through his book. Minho was carrying the last of the boxes down below deck into storage. Key and Jonghyun were the only ones he didn’t see.

“Where are Key and Jonghyun?” Onew opened his mouth to say something until a loud yell followed by a loud roar slammed through the doors leading to the galley.

“YES!” Onew saw Jonghyun on Roo blast past the two, leaving Doojoon to hold onto his hat to make sure it didn’t fly off of his head. “What in the world.” Roo was clad in armor, a helmet, a saddle, and guards on his feet. He didn’t slip on the deck so Onew assumed that he had some sort of shoes on.

“Goddammit, Jonghyun! I TOLD you not to break the damn doors!” Key yelled. Jonghyun slid to a stop next to the steering wheel with a huge grin on his face. “Sorry, Key. This is just so cool! SO COOL!”

“He certainly seems like a keeper,” Doojoon said with a smile. Onew rolled his eyes. “He’s like that all the time. I have nothing to be ashamed of.” The shook hands as Doojoon left Onew’s ship to return to his own.

Crowds of people gathered at the dock to see the ships off. The docking crew at the sky port started to untie the ropes as people cheered and called their goodbyes. Jonghyun spotted Nickhun, Wooyoung, and Junho waving furiously. He waved back to them and flashed a grin.

He suddenly saw Nickhun’s gaze shift and saw Minho beside him. Nickhun gave him a small wave which Minho returned. Jonghyun raised an eyebrow. Those two didn’t seem like they would be very close. Suddenly, something around Minho’s neck caught his eye. A ring on a necklace. He’d seen something like that before.

His mind flashed back to Nickhun in the store when he first entered earlier. He was leaning on the counter, playing with a ring on a necklace. Jonghyun gasped. “No...” He said looking in between the two. Minho turned to give Jonghyun a grin. “We’re just good friends. Nothing more.”

--

Jonghyun joined Onew at the front of the ship, wind rippling through his hair. “This is going to take a while. You’ve almost reached the halfway mark of your sentence.” Onew wrapped an arm around his waist.

“Already? Time sure flies doesn’t it.”

“It does indeed...” The Shock pulled up next to the Lucifer. It was a little bit bigger, but a little bit slower. “If you guys make it there before we do, wait for us!” He heard a faint cry from the other ship.

“Alright!” Onew shouted back.

Jonghyun stared off into the blue expanse of the sky. He pushed negative thoughts out of his head. “Hey. What are you thinking about?” Jonghyun turned to look at Onew, tracing part of his jawline with his finger. “What else?” Onew smiled before bringing his face closer for a gentle kiss.
