Entry Three - On the Matter of Food

--

Key screamed out every profane word in his vocabulary, and even made up a few new ones as the five of them ran for their lives through the dense jungle. The crashing noises gradually came closer and louder, followed by an ear-splitting roar.

“I refuse to be eaten!” Key reached into one of his bags while running and pulled out a smoke grenade. He pulled the pin with his teeth and tossed it behind him, tripping slightly on a root on the ground. Minho’s hand swung out and grabbed his arm, steadying him as they made their escape in the smoke.

“There’s the temple! There should be a monster barrier around it! Go!” They all ran for dear life from the furious roar that was still trying to find them in the smoke. One by one, they jumped through the barrier. Taemin first, followed by Key and Minho. Onew stayed back with Jonghyun. He didn’t seem like he was in the best shape of his life. He was already breathing hard, and the others had barely broken a sweat.

They had to stop so Jonghyun could catch his breath for a moment. “Holy... holy...” He gasped between breaths. Onew held a single finger up to his lips as he warily eyed the lizard prowling around trying to sniff them out. He motioned for Jonghyun to follow him, still keeping his eyes on the gigantic monster.

They flitted from tree to tree, using them as cover. Onew moved first towards the barrier, but as soon as Jonghyun made the motion to follow him, his eyes fell on the baby lizard standing at his feet. His eyes widened in horror as it gave him a toothy grin and chirped loudly.

The mother lizard turned in the direction of her baby and saw Jonghyun trying to shut it up. “Just forget about the stupid thing and RUN YOU IDIOT!” Jonghyun took a glance at the gigantic lizard now coming for him before standing up and sprinting as fast as he could towards the others.

But then in a cruel twist of fate, his body got caught in some vines. They wrapped around him and snapped him back. “Jonghyun!” Taemin’s eyes widened in horror, and he automatically stepped forward to help him. “No! Taemin stay back!” Onew slid to a stop and doubled back.

Jonghyun struggled against the vines and managed to free his arm. The baby lizard wandered up to his feet and sat down next to him. “You know, if you’re going to keep following me around, you could be more helpful!” Jonghyun’s eyes went back to Onew as he pulled out one of his swords and shouted a few words before sending a spell flying towards the mother lizard.

As the spell flew past him, he could feel the coldness seep through his being. It hit, stunning the mother momentarily as Onew flew to Jonghyun’s side and cut him down. He grabbed his arm and dragged him away as fast as he could, the baby lizard still following him, nipping playfully at his heels.

When they entered the barrier, Jonghyun saw the baby lizard suddenly fall back like it bumped into something. It looked confused for a moment, then sad as it wandered back to his mother. Jonghyun collapsed in a sweaty heap on the ground, his chest rising and falling rapidly. Onew wiped some sweat away from his forehead.

“How is it that I managed not to trip on anything?” He laughed and put up his sword. “This is what you guys do for a living?!” Jonghyun asked, still breathing hard.

“No,” Taemin said. He adjusted his monocle and gestured towards the temple. “We’re pirates. We raid treasure.”

“So we’re safe from monsters now right?” Jonghyun eyed the invisible barrier.

“Not exactly... These old temples have monster barriers to keep new monsters from coming in. It keeps the monsters that are already in the temple, inside. And some of them are a lot worse than what you’ll find out there.” Key grabbed Jonghyun’s shoulder and gave it a squeeze. “Hope you’re a good shot. We’re going to need it.”

--

Entering the temple, it was dark, and it was musky. The strange thing was, Jonghyun could still see everything clearly, even if it was dark. There were skeletons with armor littering the entrance. He gulped as he unconsciously moved closer to the group. Minho was leading up front with Taemin. Jonghyun stood in the back with Onew while Key was in the middle. None of their eyes stopped moving, always on the lookout for potential danger and treasure.

After walking down a few twisted corridors, a pack of two headed dogs stood in their path growling. Taemin moved back next to Key and flipped through his book to write furiously. The dogs attacked in pairs, and Jonghyun watched as Minho and Onew complimented each others attacks in amazement. Taemin suddenly stopped writing and whipped around. “Jonghyun! Behind you!” He turned around and saw a dog jump towards him. Suddenly as if something was guiding his motions, both of his arms grabbed his pistols at record speed, he closed one eye and pointed both guns at it, shot twice, sending the dog flying back with a yelp as it disappeared in a bright, glowing mist.

He stood shocked for a moment as a woman’s voice and laughter echoed through his mind. “Good job Jonghyun.”

“Holy crap. Have you been holding out on us?” Key whistled as he walked over to the other boy and slung an arm over his shoulder. “I’m... not quite sure what happened.”

“Does it matter? You’re blessed with impeccable aim.”

--

After several more encounters with more bizarre creatures, Jonghyun was starting to doubt his reality again. As they ventured deeper and deeper, he was starting to get more and more tired. They came to a hallway with torches lighting the entire pathway. Taemin stopped and signaled the group to do the same.

Lining the walls, Jonghyun could see various items cast in gold. Taemin walked in slowly, careful where he was stepping followed by Key. “Captain, it’s probably best that you stay here for now,” Minho said before following the other two. Onew sighed.

“No. It should be fine for him to follow us. But for the love of Fate, please step lightly.” Key looked strained as he turned around to speak to the captain. Onew nodded and walked slowly and cautiously after them. Jonghyun stayed back, eyeing the passage warily.

“Uh oh.” Suddenly, Onew tripped over a raised brick and fell onto the ground, pushing several bricks down with him. “Oh-” He rolled over to the wall as quickly as possible as five poison tipped arrows were fired from the ceiling into the spot where he was laying just a second ago.

“Oh shit!” Taemin, Key, and Minho pressed themselves against the wall as a barrage of arrows flew down, narrowly missing Jonghyun at the other end of the hallway by a few inches.

“I think I should stay with the captain...” Minho shuffled back to help Onew up as Jonghyun gingerly moved past them. “Stay with Taemin and Key.” He nodded and sidled up to the other two. “Oh. Oh!” Taemin flipped through his book and held it open to a page where a drawing of a cup was. “A cup?”

“No you idiot.” He whacked Jonghyun in the back of the head with his arm before pointing across from them. The same cup was sitting in one of the carved spaces in the wall across an adjacent hall. “The Chalice of Ravyns. Worth quite a bit, but I’m sure the number of traps guarding it would... deter most people.”

Key let out a triumphant smirk before flipping his hair and adjusting his belt. “Just leave this to me.” He cracked his fingers.

Jonghyun was quite impressed with Key and his fast reflexes and acrobatic skills. He had sharp eyes, and noticed some of the traps before Key did, relaying them to him from the other side of the room. Key never answered him, but took note of the things he said. Maybe this boy would be useful after all.

Everyone watched, holding their breath as Key approached the chalice. He looked over and found a rock in approximate weight and size to the chalice. He wiggled his fingers around for a second before quickly switching the two. He backed away carefully and put the chalice into his bag.

Suddenly the room started to shake as Key muttered swear words under his breath. The bricks beneath him started to crumble away, almost faster than he could run. “Key!” As the bricks gave way under his feet, he grabbed his grappling hook from his belt and swung it towards Minho, who immediate took out his staff and let the rope wind around it before bracing himself to support Key’s weight.

Jonghyun pressed himself against the wall with wide eyes. Taemin bent over the edge and extended his hand to Key to pull him up onto solid land. “That was a bit scary,” he said lightly before popping his neck.

--

They reached the bottom of the temple after a few more monster fights and dead ends. Jonghyun was getting used to fighting, but he still felt ridiculously tired. They’d picked up various trinkets along the way, nothing too heavily guarded.

At the end though, there was a small room with a bright light shining on a pedestal. “That should be the piece of the bracelet,” Taemin said looking over at the captain. Onew nodded and made his way towards the middle.

“What bracelet?” Jonghyun said behind Taemin. Taemin just shook his head and didn’t answer his question. His curiosity was almost overwhelming. “It’s not my story to tell. You’ll have to ask the captain.”

Onew approached the pedestal carefully, eyes on the gleaming piece of metal. He reached out and picked it up, feeling a gentle breeze flow around his body. “Is this what you really want?” A woman’s voice said in his head. He gulped and stuffed the piece into his pocket before rejoining the party.

“Let’s get out of here Taemin.” The younger boy nodded and pulled his staff out. Chanting a few words in the Old World language, a seal appeared underneath him. Automatically, the other four stood around him on the seal. Taemin pictured the entrance of the temple in his mind, and Jonghyun felt his body disappear into the air before slamming back down onto the earth.

Onew pulled him up and smiled. “Congratulations. You’ve just completed your first temple.” The other grinned at him. “Not bad. He didn’t die or anything.” Jonghyun laughed with them until he heard a familiar squealing. Except this time, it didn’t sound happy. It was despair. Jonghyun got up and walked over to the barrier.

“Jonghyun? What’s wrong?” He froze in his spot. The baby lizard from earlier was shaking something.

“... Oh god.” The mother lizard was dead. And not in the nicest manner he’d ever seen before. The smell of blood overwhelmed him as he felt the vomit rise to his throat.

“Oh jeeze.” Key stood back disgusted at the sight. Minho’s eyes looked sad, and Taemin paled. Onew looked the most sad out of all of them until his eyes turned serious. “Hunters. They must be here. We need to get to the ship.”

--

When they reached the Lucifer, they saw another ship in the distance anchored to the island. Taemin squinted his eyes. “I can’t see what the side of that ship says...” Jonghyun stood next to him for a moment before squinting his eyes. “It says... The Heartbeat?”

Key swore again and spit on the ground. “Figures. Only those assholes could be heartless enough to kill a mother like that. Even if it WAS trying to eat us.” They worked quickly to untie the ship. Minho slid a ramp down for the rest of the crew to board the ship. Halfway up, Jonghyun felt a familiar nipping at his heels.

He turned around and saw the baby lizard staring at him with curious eyes. Jonghyun hesitated. “I’m sorry about your mom... but we can’t keep you. But you are pretty cute...” It didn’t seem to listen to him, running past him onto the ship.

Jonghyun ran after it and it squealed before running and hiding behind him as Key tried to chase him off. “What the hell is this thing doing here? We can’t keep it! It belong here!”

“But... it’s going to die out here...” Jonghyun’s eyes lingered on the lizard as he turned around with puppy dog eyes.

“You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me.”

“I DID mention that they grow to be over three stories tall right? They’re a species indigenous to this land mass. It’s called a dinosaur.” They all turned and looked at Onew. Minho had a disapproving look in his eyes. Jonghyun concentrated all of his might into the puppy dog eyes.

Onew regarded his expression for a moment, looking almost pained. “Oh alright. You can keep it.” Everyone else yelled in disbelief and disagreement while Jonghyun whooped in glee. He picked up the dinosaur and smiled a big grin. “I think I’ll name it Roo.”

“You can keep it until it gets too big for the ship.” Key stomped angrily as Taemin flipped through his book rapidly with a smirk on his face. Jonghyun let it nibble on his finger until it bit him. He yelped and pulled his finger away.

“Oh, by the way Jonghyun. You shouldn’t let it bite you. Its fangs secret a neurotoxin which paralyzes-” Jonghyun suddenly fell over onto the ground, unable to move.

“...Your entire body in a matter of seconds.”

“Great. Just great. Just what we need! Another safety hazard. At this rate, Taemin won’t live past the age of thirty!” Taemin rolled his eyes and pressed his palm on Jonghyun’s shoulder, chanting a strong of words until Jonghyun’s body went limp.

“What do you mean he won’t live past thirty?” Jonghyun sat up immediately as Key disappeared down to the galley.

“Every time Taemin heals, he uses his life force. So he’s literally taking his life away to heal people. Which is why we try to avoid injuries and let the small ones heal naturally. As the captain, I should be more careful but I can’t help it sometimes, but when Taemin brought me back to life, it took years off of his life.” There was a loud squeal behind them as Key wrestled Roo to the ground and strapped a muzzle on him.

“There. At least he’s less of a safety hazard now. What the hell am I supposed to feed this thing?”

Minho stood next to Onew and smiled. “You like him don't you?" He asked quietly.

“Of course I do. He's part of the crew now."

“That's not what I mean. You like him, like him don't you?" Onew was silent. “Get back to work Minho. We have to get out of here." The taller boy smirked before saluting him and walking off to the steering wheel.
