Chapter 10 - The Bells
--
Key stepped off of the train, squinting as the rising sunlight hit his eyes. The wind blew dust and sand across his shoes as he made his way off of the train station, walking towards a familiar town.
Nostalgia hit him as he walked past stores he used to visit and when people he hadn’t seen in years greeted him like he never left. It wasn’t too long of a walk from the station to his grandmother’s house. He opened the front gate to see her tending to her garden and flowers.
“Hey, Grandma. What are you doing up so early?” The old woman looked up from her vegetables and squinted at Key. “Kibum? Good lord, what did you do to your hair?” She sounded completely appalled but ran over to give him a hug anyway.
“I missed you too, Grandma,” he said with laughter in his voice as he wrapped his arms around her. She held him at arm distance before patting his cheek with her hand. “You’ve gotten so thin... this won’t do at all.” She clicked her tongue a few times before shaking her head and grabbing his hand to lead him inside.
“It’s nice of you to visit me every now and then.”
“I know, I know. I’ll be here for a while. Mind if I stay here for a bit?”
“Of course not. Your room is the same way you left it. Well, it’s a little bit cleaner.” Key rolled his eyes, dropped his bag next to the coat rack by the door, and slipped off his shoes in haste as she dragged him into the kitchen.
After cooking silently in the kitchen she finally asked him a question. “Why are you here Kibum? I’d love to think it’s because you missed me so terribly much but...”
Key pursed his lips and leaned back in his chair, hands in his coat pockets. “Some things to take care of.” She nodded knowingly and turned around to pat him on the back.
When she turned back to finish the breakfast, a smile curled up on Key’s face. “Taeminnie’s getting married.” She dropped her spatula with a loud clang before whipping around with the most surprised expression on her face. “My Taeminnie? My bitty baby? He’s getting married?!” Her voice went higher and higher with each thing she said.
“Yeah. To the richest man in the country no less.” She chuckled to herself. That boy deserved some happiness after the life he had. She turned around to see the pensive look on Key’s face before placing down a plate of food in front of him. “Yah. Why is he getting married before you?” She smacked him in the back of the head.
Key choked on the eggs he was trying to swallow. “Grandma! Seriously!” He gave her a mock glare before hovering over his food. “It’s not like I haven’t met someone,” he said quietly. His grandma just smiled at him and sighed. Her baby had a hard life too.
--
Key spent the next few days getting reacquainted with his hometown. The people around there acted like he never left in the first place. In a way, he was grateful. He got more comments about his hair than questions about what he was doing back in the town.
He visited the swimming hole that he used to spend his summers at with Jinwoon and Taemin. The swinging rope that Key risked his life to tie to the tree was still there. He smiled slightly as he got closer to the tree, seeing the carvings of their names into the bark. He ran a hand over it lightly.
He visited the hills where they used to lay together and watch the clouds go by. The grass was still soft, like blankets. He and Jinwoon had picnics there often, and he came here with Taemin to roll down the hills, laughing until they were out of breath and their stomachs hurt..
He visited their secret spot in the middle of the woods. They built a clubhouse one summer there. Jinwoon brought a hammock to tie to two trees outside of the clubhouse. Key marveled that it was still there, having survived the rain and harsh weather. It was a little bit dirty, but it didn’t stop him from sitting down in it and taking a few swings.
This went on for a few weeks until he found himself finally standing outside of the hospital where Jinwoon was hooked up to life support machines. He felt anxiety flood his body as he unconsciously walked through the sliding doors.
“Hi, welcome to- Oh. Key. It’s good to see you again.” The receptionist smiled at him at he bowed, eyes darting around the room. “Here to see Jinwoon?” He stiffened at his name but nodded slightly. He followed her numbly as she stood up and led the way.
She stopped in front of the door and opened it for him, smiling as she gestured for him to go in. He walked in slowly as she closed the door behind him.
He was hooked up to so many machines. No sounds met his ears besides the beeping of his heart monitor and the hum of some other machines. Key walked over to the empty chair beside his bed and collapsed into it.
It never got easy seeing him like that. His wounds had healed, but his eyes had been closed for far too long. He didn’t know what he was waiting for. He just wanted Jinwoon to open his eyes, smile at him and make fun of him for being such a worry wart, that he was okay and everything was going to be fine. But now, Key knew better than that.
“Hey love. It’s been a while hasn’t it?” Key reached out and held his limp hand in his. He was quiet for a moment. “I love you. I always will. And you know that but... I know our love is impossible now. And I shouldn’t be holding on to something that’s long gone.” He could feel the tears threatening to spill from his eyes.
“I’ve met someone else... He’ll never be you, but he’s amazing in his own right. I’m sorry Jinnie. I’m sorry it took me so long to let you go.”
--
He didn’t expect to cry when they stopped the machines. He didn’t expect himself to fall onto his knees in tears when the heart monitor flat-lined.. His grandmother patted him gently on the head and gave his shoulder a reassuring squeeze. He had finally done it.
Key arranged for the funeral later that week, paying for it with his own money. He couldn’t stop himself from shedding tears during the service, and when they lowered his coffin into the grave, he was shaking. Jinwoon was buried next to Key’s parents.
He visited the grave every week after that for months. Telling him stories of his life, what he was doing now. He told him about Taemin, his friends in the city. He told him about Minho. He told him about his car collection that made him so jealous he wanted to punch a baby. His hands wandered up to the dog tags he found on his bed one day when he came home.
He took them off and hung them on Jinwoon’s grave. “This will be the last time I’ll visit you in a while... I hope they’re treating you right in heaven.” He stood up, running a hand over the smooth gravestone before walking off.
The wind blew the dog tags together, the sunlight glinting off the side.
For never and ever.

The days blended together for Minho. Get up, shower, go to work, go to lunch with his friends, listen to Jinki and Jonghyun spazz about their relationships, go back to work, leave work, go to the cafe for some coffee, back home to work on his car, shower, sleep. Rinse and repeat.
Every day he waited for something. A sign. A text. A phone call. A miracle. Months passed by, and he still had the same expression on his face. He was still waiting for his Kim Kibum to come back like he promised. The weather was beautiful, but everything seemed bleak to Minho without Key.
He walked into the cafe one day to see Taemin with a huge smile on his face while whispering to Jinki across the counter. Jinki smiled too, and Minho heard a faint, “No way!” as he sat down next to them. They stopped whispering abruptly, separating from each other.
“Have you and Jonghyun got your tuxes for the wedding yet?” Minho raised an eyebrow at the other man. “The wedding is in a week. And yes. I do have it already. After all, I am the best man.” He didn’t ask Taemin about who would be walking him down the aisle. He was too tired to think about the details of their wedding.
“That’s good... That’s good,” Jinki said offhandedly. He was beyond excitement. But seeing Minho that way after months and months really put a damper on his mood. “I’ll head home first love. I’ll see you at home.” They kissed over the counter as Taemin tried not to run out of the cafe. Jinki chuckled at his behavior, which surprisingly went unnoticed by Minho.
“You’re starting to lose your touch.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Nothing.”
--
Taemin saw it parked out on the street. It brought back a rush of memories as he ran his hand over the paint. He looked up to the window to see it glowing dimly in the setting sun. Taemin almost squealed as he ran inside the apartment building, throwing open the door to his apartment.
Key was sitting on the couch, bag on the coffee table and a mug of coffee in his hands. “Key!” Taemin yelled, throwing himself over the couch and onto the other boy. Surprised, Key steadied himself and tried to keep Taemin from knocking the mug from his hands.
“Aish! I miss you too, now let go of me!” Key yelled as the other boy hugged him around the waist and buried his head in his chest. “I started to miss the smell of stale cigarette smoke.”
“That’s a weird thing to miss.” He looked around the apartment earlier. His things were packed neatly in boxes in the storage closet. Jinki looked like he was comfortably moved in. They probably shared a room, but it felt pretty homely.
“I guess there’s no room for me here then huh?” He finished his coffee and set the mug down on the table. “I guess there’s some where else I could go.” Taemin clung to him, refusing to let him go. “It’s almost been a year! Let me enjoy this will you?”
The two of them caught up for a little bit until Key looked up at the clock. Minho was supposed to be getting off of work soon. Taemin noticed his gaze on the clock and smiled. “I’m happy for you Key.”
“Yeah, I’m happy for me too. Well. Maybe I should be happy for you. The shackles of marriage will be placed upon you next week and-”
“Key~! Don’t call it that!”
--
Another day of worked dragged by. Minho was looking forward to a shower and going straight to bed. As he entered the gates though, he noticed that the garage door was open. He’d closed it before he left. The faint light of the garage glowed as he got closer, parking his car in an open space. He opened the door and headed towards the other room.
He pushed open the slightly open door. The sight that met his eyes made his mind go completely blank. There was Key, leaning on a car he recognized from the photo album. His baby. Parked on the pedestal next to his Challenger that he finally finished a few months ago. He was smoking a cigarette, eyes cast off in the distance until he dropped it and ground it out with his foot. He looked up and caught Minho’s gaze with a slight smile.
“You finished it,” he said. Minho blinked at him a few times. “I did.” Key nodded before chuckling to himself. Minho’s body carried him over to Key as he pushed himself up off of his car. He reached out to trace Key’s jawline lightly, like he was going to disappear if he tried too hard.
Key reached up to grab his hand and planted a kiss on his knuckles. “Sorry I took so long. But I’m here.” He stepped in closer to Minho, circling his arms around him in a hug. “And I’m all yours,” he whispered into his ear. “I love you, Minho. I’m sorry it took me so long to give you all of my heart.”
--
The church bells were ringing on a beautiful winter day. Everyone was far too excited to feel the coldness of the weather, Taemin especially as he paced back in forth in the waiting room in his white tux. Key watched his pace back and forth, completely exasperated. He understood, but that didn’t stop it from being annoying.
“Key! Why are you sitting like that?! You’re going to wrinkle your tux!” Key blinked a few times before rolling his eyes and standing up.
“What about you? At this rate, you’re going to wear a hole in the floor and fall through to the other side of the world.” Suddenly the introduction to the wedding march started to play and Taemin whipped around. “Oh my god. Oh my god.” He started to panic. Key laughed and stood in front of the door, holding his arm out for the other man to take.
“Coming? Don’t want to leave Jinki at the altar now, do we?” Taemin calmed down a little bit as he reached out for Key’s arm. “What would I do without you?”
“Whatever you’ve been doing to Jinki since he moved in.” Taemin laughed, the innocent smile appearing across his face again. Key leaned over and pressed a friendly kiss to Taemin’s temple. “I’m happy for you baby.” The doors swung open, and they both faced forward, walking down the aisle.
Jinki had the biggest smile on his face whenever Taemin came into view. Minho and Jonghyun stood next to them, both of them with smiles, but Minho’s eyes were on Key. When they made it to the altar, Key flashed a smile towards Minho and stood off to the side.
“You look... like an angel.” Jinki was breathless. It was finally happening. Taemin just smiled at him.
It was finally happening.
--
They left for their honeymoon the following day. Minho and Key dropped them off at the airport, hugging the newly weds and wishing them a good honeymoon. The car ride back was silent, but the silence was comfortable. No more did Minho have to wonder about what Key was thinking. Key was his now, and that thought alone brought a smile to his face.
Minho’s bedroom was full of boxes of Key’s things. They were scattered here and there, some opened, some unopened. He was nothing less than thrilled when Key said he was moving in with him. He didn’t mind that Key decided that without asking. It’s not like his answer would’ve been no.
“There’s an orchard in your back yard.” Key was standing on the balcony again with Minho’s arm around him. “I noticed.”
“The trees look like a good distance apart for a hammock.” Minho smiled and chuckled into his ear, laying his head on his shoulder. “Go on down then. I’ll meet you down there in a few minutes.”
--
Key stood shivering in the cold for a moment until Minho appeared behind him, grabbing his hand and leading him down the orchard. “Where are we going?” Minho didn’t answer him, and Key’s question was answered when a large greenhouse came into view.
Minho opened the door, and a blast of warm air met Key’s face, causing a light blush to appear on his cheeks. Inside were flowers of every variety and color, the smells that hit him caused him to close his eyes and take a deep breath.
“This air is too clean.” Minho rolled his eyes as he pulled him farther into the greenhouse. It was so warm inside. Key shed his jacket and dropped it onto an empty spot on a table. Minho stopped at a spot where two trees were planted. A thin hammock was tied between them.
Key went forward first, laying down on the hammock with a sigh. Minho laid down next to him, causing Key to shift his position, laying on Minho’s arm, arm thrown across Minho’s chest. They were silent for a bit, listening to the wind howl outside.
“So did you ever come up with an answer?” Minho murmured before pressing a kiss to his forehead. Key looked up at him. “Answer to what?”
“What I mean to you.” Key was silent for a moment before he chuckled.
“You’re not my first love. But you’ll definitely be my last.”

AN;; Okay so I lied. It ended up being a happy ending after all. ^^;;
