There was something off about the way Dongho walked. It wasn’t really a walk as it was a shuffle. Jinki kept a watchful eye on him, just in case he decided to do something stupid. He’d learned many times that he couldn’t trust The Fey. They were pleasant to him until he said he wouldn’t let them poke around with his eye.
That was the thing with them. They were only nice to you until their own needs were fulfilled. After they got what they wanted, they’d feed whatever poor soul it was to their largest, and biggest crime against nature yet.
“Have you seen Jinki lately?” Dongho asked as they turned a corner. Jinki raised an eyebrow at him. “Oh. The bone dragon. We named it Jinki.” Jinki gave him a sarcastic laugh and rolled his eyes.
“I’ll take it as a no then. I heard him the other night, but it’s the weirdest thing. He just won’t come home.” Jinki shook his head. The bone dragon was a mix between three different creatures in strange proportions. He called it the Scorpisaurgon, or Scorpy for short.
Jonghyun and Minho looked back and forth at each other. Jinki didn’t tell them about this. Nickhun mentioned it vaguely before they left, but he didn’t go into any detail. The gigantic roar over the mountains didn’t do much for his nerves.
It didn’t look like Jinki and Dongho got a long very well either. Jonghyun could almost feel the tension between them, despite the aloof look on Jinki’s face and the playful grin on Dongho’s.
“So,” Dongho said as they rounded a corner, “Reconsidered letting us take a look at that eye of yours yet?” Jinki turned to look at the shorter boy and closed his brown eye.
“Not at all.” Dongho gave him a look and turned to the front with a pout.”Why not? I mean, it’s not like we’d remove it or anything. Though if it were really interesting...” He trailed off at the end of his sentence as Jinki rolled his eyes.
“And what about you?” He asked, turning to glance back at Minho.
“What about me?” Minho asked. Suddenly, he felt very uncomfortable by the violet gaze of the strange boy. “What’s it like having-” Minho’s body moved by itself. He flew up to the other boy and reached around to grab the front collar of his clothes, lifting him up into the air. His eyes flashed an angry gold for a moment before returning to brown.
Dongho grinned at Minho as confusion spread across his features. “Mind putting me down? I do like to breathe, you know.” Minho blinked at him a few times before mumbling an apology and dropping him. Dongho straightened out his clothes before looking over at the confused look on Jonghyun’s face.
He turned towards Jinki again, only to see him looking Minho up and down, a slight frown on his face. Jonghyun hurried up to Minho and whispered something to him with a worried expression. Minho didn’t say anything back to him, choosing to shake his head and rub his eyes.
When he opened up his eyes again, he was met with the all-knowing smirk of Dongho.
--
As the hours passed by, Minho felt less and less of his body. He didn’t think too much of it though, attributing it to the cold surroundings. Jinki cast wary glances at him from time to time, something that made Minho irritable as more time passed.
“What? Do you have something to say to me?” He asked when they finally stopped to rest. Jonghyun collapsed in a heap onto the floor and rubbed at his legs, trying to get the feeling back into them. Jinki blinked at him a few times before pursing his lips and shaking his head.
“No. I was just.. looking.” Dongho was perched on a stalagmite, looking back and forth between the two with an amused smile. Jonghyun was the only one that seemed completely oblivious to the rising tension in the air.
“Jinki, could you make another fire? I can’t feel my legs.” And without a second glance at Minho, Jinki conjured up a small fire in front of Jonghyun. Minho squatted down beside it and held his hands close to the flame.
“Humans and their needs. I don’t understand why they’re so many of them when they’re so weak,” the Fey said as he slid down to stand next to Jinki. “Too bad they don’t make them like you anymore, right, Jinki? How many times have you cheated death now?” Jinki blinked a few times in annoyance and tried not to roll his eyes again.
“You never die no matter how many times we try. Are you absolutely, positively sure you won’t let us study you? Just imagine! A whole race of people just like you!”
Minho and Jonghyun looked back and forth at each other as Jinki turned to Dongho with a glare. “Really? A whole race of people like me? I don’t recall that turning out so well the last time you tried to improve on humans. Uh, I remember something called vampir, very vaguely though. Just vaguely.”
The sarcasm in his voice seemed bitter with much more hidden anger than Jonghyun had ever noticed in Jinki. Dongho just laughed and shrugged his shoulders. “You win some, you lose some. Can’t get close to winning if we stop trying. So you know, if I could just-”
“Don’t. Touch. Me.” Dongho retracted his hands with a smirk. “Of course.”
--
Jonghyun could feel his legs giving out on him before they collapsed and sent him falling to the floor. Minho helped him up and tried to steady him, but Jonghyun found that he couldn’t stay standing. Jinki wordlessly grabbed Jonghyun and pulled him onto his back. The younger man tried to protest but the severe glance he got from Jinki shut him up.
“I’m sorry,” he murmured next to Jinki’s ear. “I don’t know what’s wrong with my legs.”
“It’s cold. Nothing strictly human could keep blood circulation going for long here, which is why we need to get out of here as soon as possible. You should regain feeling in your legs as soon as we get out of here.” Jonghyun moved his eyes over to Minho, shivering slightly, but still walking like normal.
“Is there... something wrong with him?” Jonghyun whispered as quietly as he could. He saw Jinki nod slightly. Jonghyun’s expression turned to worry. “Will he be okay?”
“We’ll see.”
--
As they neared the end of their trek through the caves, they stopped in a final room with the exit. Dongho walked over to a wall and drew some strange symbols onto a fall with his finger, a trail of white light lingering for the briefest moment before disappearing.
“We’ll be waiting for you.” Dongho gave them a curt bow before shuffling out of the caves. The three of them looked around at each other before cautiously approaching the exit.
“Ow, what the hell?!” Jinki turned to see an icicle fall from the ceiling and graze Minho’s cheek. He didn’t even have time to register what happened before the room filled with falling skeletons.
“Jinki!” Jinki felt Jonghyun’s weight get ripped away from his body. “Jonghyun!” He turned to see his horrified expression as he disappeared into a sea of skeletons. Suddenly, the atmospheric pressure increased as Jinki ran over to Minho, both of them back to back, searching frantically for Jonghyun.
The room seemed to jerk in their eyes before their vision cleared.
“What...” The room was filled with Jonghyun.
“They’re copies. All copies of Jonghyhn. Where’s the real one?”
“I’m the real one!” They all shouted.
Jinki swore in all the languages he knew.

Taemin spent as much time as he could in the Archives, translating as fast as he could. No one dared to disturb him, not even Yoseob. Jinwoon was the only human contact he has in his presence.
Kikwang took to guarding the door to the Archives, letting only Yoseob or Key in whenever they had business to speak of with Taemin, or to bring him food. Their guest, Taecyeon, made himself scarce. He never appeared unless someone called his name to speak with him, spending most of his time trying to track down Junsu.
People started to disappear from the town. Taemin’s mind was starting to unravel from all the stress and questions he had to answer. Taecyeon would appear to speak with him on the matter, completely convinced that Junsu was behind the disappearances.
There wasn’t much he could do. Taemin had never felt so helpless in his life.
One night, he let out a defeated sigh and dropped his quill onto his desk, rubbing his face with his cold hands. Jinwoon left earlier that night to get some rest. The dark circles under Taemin’s eyes were likely to become permanent now.
“Taemin? You’re still here?” Yoseob approached his desk before settling down in the seat in front of him. “Where else would I be? These books are the only answers we have to what could be in store for our kingdom.”
“Maybe you should take a break. You’ve been here-”
“I don’t have time to take a break,” he snapped at Yoseob. He immediately felt guilty when Yoseob wouldn’t meet his eyes.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to snap at you. I just. People are disappearing. Jonghyun’s been gone for ages. I don’t even know if he’s alive or not. I don’t know if he’s found a cure, even if there is one. I don’t know what’s terrorizing the town. I’m not fit to be a ruler.” Yoseob got up silently from his seat and moved to Taemin’s side.
“You’re only human. You’re not meant to have all the answers at once. I know you’re worried, I know you’re scared. But there’s only so much you can do.” Yoseob gripped Taemin’s shoulder and gave it a squeeze. He grabbed Taemin’s arm and pulled him up from the chair to lead him out of the Archives.
“But I have so much to do,” he said lifelessly, trying to glance back at the Archives.
“No. At this rate, you’re going to wither away and die before you get anything useful done.” Taemin stood there glancing at the ground for a moment before looking up at Yoseob with tired, defeated eyes. He took a few staggering steps forwards and fell into his arms, burying his face into his chest.
“Yoseob. I’m so scared. What’s going to happen?” Yoseob stroked his hair gently before holding him out at arm distance. “I don’t know. But I’ll protect you. I promise.”

Jinki and Minho were afraid to attack any of the Jonghyun copies, in case any of them were actually the real Jonghyun. Jinki took in a deep breath before closing his brown eye and glancing around the room. They were all blue, save for one slumped against the wall across the room.
“There! Minho! He’s on the other side of the room! The only one not standing! We have to get to him before he freezes to death here!” Minho didn’t need a second order before he let out a yell and started to attack the Jonghyun copies.
Jinki moved swiftly into the crowd, keeping his blue eye trained on the real Jonghyun. The fakes ones pulled and pushed at him, occasionally attacking him, but he disposed of them quickly, sending them to the ground as grains of sand.
A roar suddenly echoed through the room, followed by bits of dust and rock falling from the ceiling. Jinki heard the sound of musical chimes before he glanced up and saw the falling icicles. He glanced back to see Minho pressed up against the wall as the fell.
Jinki, however, moved forward towards Jonghyun, dodging the giant ice knives as though they were falling like rain. Before he got to Jonghyun though, a copy grabbed at his leg, causing him to fall. It snapped its jaws at him while Jinki tried to push it back with his legs.
He got a grip on its neck and head, twisting it to the side with a sickening crunch. He pushed himself back with his legs and took a few deep breaths until the skeleton started to move again, broken neck unheeded.
Jinki swore until another icicle fell from the ceiling, effectively pinning it to the ground. It writhed and hissed in pain and still tried to grab at Jinki as he made his way over to Jonghyun. “Jonghyun! Jonghyun! Oh gods.”
Jonghyun’s face was turning a pale shade of blue, his eyes barely open. “J-J-J-Jinki... It’s f-f-f-freezing...” Jinki grabbed him and threw him onto his back before making his way through the maze of embedded icicles.
He blew past Minho and grabbed his arm, dashing for the exit. The copies turned to chase after them until Jinki raised his arm and said a few words, blowing up the rock above the exit and sealing it shut.
Jonghyun was shivering furiously on Jinki’s back. Jinki hurried along the path, dragging Minho with him. The grip on his arm was almost painful, but Minho didn’t mind for once, letting himself get dragged away.
Jinki stopped at a small cave in the side of the rising mountain and placed Jonghyun down carefully before starting an enormous fire. Minho sat down, welcoming the warmth before turning his attention to Jonghyun.
The color was returning to his face again, much to Jinki’s relief. Jinki saw the Chu poking its head out of Jonghyun’s pouch, shaking itself off before scurrying around his face. It climbed on top of him, and suddenly without warning, shocked his entire body.
Jonghyun jerked up into a sitting position, eyes wide. The Chu tumbled down his body and settled next to the fire, chewing on some treat from Jonghyun’s bag.
“Glad to see you in the land of the living,” Jinki said. Jonghyun blinked a few times before scooting closer to the fire, rubbing his arms and face.
“Be careful. Get any closer, and you might go up in flames.” Jonghyun glanced over at Jinki and shook his head.
“At this point, I’d rather burn to death than freeze to death.” Jinki didn’t answer him as he made his way over to the entrance of the small cave. From there, he could see the entrance to the lair of the Fey. He turned to look at Jonghyun and Minho. It would be a death sentence taking the both of them there with him.
He glanced back to the lair with his mind made. When they were sleeping, he would go steal the Mithridate. He prayed to everything that their luck was better than his.
