Traffic Jams
--
The sweltering heat seemed to add to everyone’s temper that one hot summer morning. Traffic was bumper to bumper, with an inch of movement every fifteen minutes. Jonghyun had his window rolled down, arm on the door with his phone pressed to his ear. “Key. I’m going to be late today. Traffic is a nightmare.” He heard Key sigh from the other line. There were some background noises floating around.
“What no lecture this time about how irresponsible I am, and how even though I’m your best friend, you’ll fire me if I’m late one more time?” He could almost see Key glaring and pursing his lips over the phone. “I would if my best employee wasn’t caught in it either. And it’s not you, you dimwit.” Jonghyun was about to open his mouth to say something but shut it with a grin.
“Yeah, yeah. I’ll be a few hours late.”
“Call me when you get out of it.”
“Yes sir.” Jonghyun hung up the phone with a smile and threw it into the passenger’s seat. He loosened his seat belt and leaned outside of his window to survey the traffic. There were cars as far as the eye could see. But the eerie thing was, it was quiet besides the roar of engines. The heat was suffocating, and the small breeze wasn’t enough to make the sweat on his forehead feel cool.
Jonghyun pulled his head into the car and sighed, tapping at his steering wheel. He flipped through the radio stations only to find nothing but commercials playing. “Great... just great...” He looked around until he noticed a car door open several cars ahead in the lane to his left.
A man got out with a sheepish smile, waving to the people in the car next to him. His white dress shirt was untucked, hanging wrinkled over black slacks. The sleeved were rolled up messily, one side higher than the other, and he loosed his green tie as he noticed Jonghyun’s gaze on him and smiled with a small wave.
He closed the door of the car and went to climb on to the trunk and laid sprawled out across the back windshield. Jonghyun stifled laughter as he saw someone else poke their head out of the driver’s seat and yell at him. “Jinki! Seriously? What the hell are you doing to my car?”
The man named Jinki sat up and turned the upper half of his body to face the other man. “Jeeze Minho, lighten up. You’re acting like I’m jumping on your car or something.” Jinki laid back down and let his head fall to the side. “And you really need to wash your car.”
After a few seconds, Jonghyun saw Jinki sit back up and bang on the windshield. “Hey! Do you still have my guitar in the trunk?” Minho stuck his head back outside the window. “Why...”
“I dunno. I figure since we’re here and moved an inch in the last half an hour, I’d play some traffic jams. Get it? Traffic jams?” Minho sighed as Jinki laughed at his own joke, almost tearing up. Jonghyun couldn’t help but roll his eyes. That had to be the worst pun in the history of all puns.
He watched the other man hop off of the car, waving to the people in the car he was facing before turning around and lifting up the newly popped open trunk. He pulled out an old guitar case and opened it, before removing the guitar and closing the trunk behind him.
He sat on the trunk again, tuning the strings by ear and playing a few notes here and there before strumming a few notes to a song. The song was light and had a catchy beat, and definitely in English. Jinki’s smile was infectious while he was singing the song, head bobbing to the music.
He noticed other cars rolling down their windows and listening to him sing with lightened expressions. He even heard some cheers go out for the man as he was singing. Jinki turned and nodded his head in their direction, flashing a killer smile.
A few minutes later, the traffic moved slightly. Jinki leaned forward slightly as the car moved underneath him. He finished up his song with a final chord and bowed as people cheered for him from their cars. “I take requests! Only until we get out of this traffic though so better make them quick!” He yelled out into the crowd with that same blazing smile.
Jonghyun heard various song names being shouted so he thought he might as well suggest a few too. He saw Jinki’s face turn towards his after hearing his voice. “Nothing Better? Well... that IS more of a piano song but I suppose I can give it a shot on the guitar.”
Jonghyun grinned at him as he turned off his engine and got out, stuffing his keys into his pocket. “Mind if I sing it with you?” He sauntered towards the other man with a grin on his face.
“Better yet. You sing it, and I’ll just play.” Jonghyun leaned on the car next to Jinki and listening to the beginning notes that Jinki strummed out. He was good, Jonghyun had to admit. Jinki looked at him expectantly as the song went on, and Jonghyun began to sing.
Jinki’s grin turned massive when he heard Jonghyun’s voice. To say he was a good singing was a bit of an understatement. People were captivated by his voice from their cars, and Jinki had to stifle a laugh as he saw some people waving their arms back and forth to the song.
When Jonghyun hit the falsetto notes, Jinki felt chills go down his spine. He thought he was going to be lost in it forever until traffic started to move again. Jonghyun stopped with a sheepish grin, running towards his car to move it. The crowd boo’d at the sudden stop of the song before they all moved forward again.
Jinki walked along side his car with the guitar slung on his back and hands in his pockets. He wiped some sweat away from his forehead before shielding his eyes from the sunlight and looking out over the vast traffic in front of them. He whistled to himself. “That’s a long way to go.” Jonghyun got out of his car again, this time just leaving it in neutral so he could push it the five inches they were going to move again.
He stood next to Jinki and mimicked his pose, puffing his chest out. “What are we looking at?” He said with a smile on his face. “Our destination!” Jinki said dramatically as he pointed away at the far off office buildings. Jonghyun laughed and leaned back against the car.
“Anyway,” Jinki said turning around to face him. “Where were we?”

The two sang songs for anyone who requested them, including very interesting versions of the itsy bitsy spider and twinkle, twinkle little star. Finally, they bid their audience a good bye as Jinki’s fingers were starting to feel like they were falling off. He hadn’t played that long in a long time.
They two talked for a while at Jonghyun’s car, giving it the occasional push as the traffic moved slightly. Finally, after two hours of being stuck in that traffic, they were free. Minho poked his head out of the window again, yelling at Jinki to get back in the car so they could get to work.
Jinki nodded and shook hands with Jonghyun before turning around to jog towards his car. That’s when Jonghyun realized he knew Jinki’s name, but Jinki didn’t know his.
“My name is Kim Jonghyun, by the way!” He shouted after the other man. Jinki waved as he got into the car and stuck his head out of the window to reply. “I know!” He waved again as the car sped off. Jonghyun got inside of his car, clearly confused. How did he know what his name was?

Jonghyun walked into the office with lemonade in one hand, and Key yelling at him through the phone in the other. After the traffic jam, he decided that since he was already late, he was going to make a pit stop and get a well deserved drink.
“This is completely unacceptable! What makes you think that just because you’re my best friend, I won’t fire you once you get here! You’re so-” Jonghyun hung up his phone as he opened the door to their shared office and slid into his seat.
“Irresponsible! I swear Jonghyun! One of these days! One of these days, I’m going to fire you.” Jonghyun just smiled at him, lips wrapped around the straw to his lemonade before offering the cup to Key.
“Lemonade?”

As his work day dragged on, Jonghyun thought it was worse than the traffic jam. At least then he had someone to entertain him and keep him company. He caught himself singing the song Jinki was singing earlier, then suddenly heard the harmony hummed with him. He looked up from his paperwork in surprise to see Jinki in his office, adjusting his glasses and dropping off some paperwork for Key.
“Sir,” Jinki said with a grin before tapping his glasses and disappearing out of the office. Jonghyun’s jaw dropped. What in the world. As soon as Key came back from wherever he was going, Jonghyun bombarded him with questions.
“How long as Jinki been working here?”
“Lee Jinki? He’s been here for almost three years now. Why?” Jonghyun face palmed. Now he felt like a complete dick. “I... I was stuck in the traffic jam pretty close to him. We sang songs together while waiting for the time to pass.” Key gave him a weird look and laughed.
“Okay, Jonghyun. Okay.”
--
Jinki got the odd feeling someone was watching him while he was working. He looked up and saw Jonghyun leaning on the wall of his cubicle with a grin on his face. “Why hello there. Why didn’t you tell me you worked here?” Jonghyun asked with a smile on his face.
Jinki shrugged. “I’m not really someone to be noticed around this place. As you may have noticed.” Jinki laughed at his words and leaned back in his chair with a smile. “Does Minho work here too?”
“Yeah. In the Human Resources department. I just crunch numbers all day and write reports.” Jonghyun nodded thoughtfully, drumming his fingers on the cubical wall before hitting it gently with his fist.
“Well, tell him to go home alone tonight.” Jinki raised an eyebrow at him. “Tell him I’ll be taking you out for dinner, coffee, and possibly to my place, so he shouldn’t wait up for you either.” A grin formed on Jinki’s face as he shook his head.
“I’m not taking no for an answer either.”
“I know.”
“You know a lot of things, don’t you?” Jonghyun asked while raising an eyebrow at Jinki. The other man just laughed at him as he leaned onto his desk with one arm to smile at him.
“You say so at the company picnic every year too.”
“God...damn. I need to get to know my employees.”
