The Umbrella

--

For the past week, the skies were nothing but a dull grey color as the rain fell. Taemin couldn’t complain though, he was getting the best sleep of his life to the dull pitter patter of the rain on his window. Occasionally there was the flash of thunder and the roll of lightning, but the noises just seemed to lull him to sleep easier.

“Taemin! Hurry up or you’ll be late for school dear!”

“Coming Mom!” He threw the covers off of himself and headed to the bathroom to freshen up. As he brushed his teeth, he took a good look at himself in the mirror. Now that he was in his last year of high school, he decided to leave his hair longer. It was naturally straight and the tips barely touched his shoulder when he left it down.

He ran into his room and quickly changed into his uniform, tying his hair back into a ponytail. They were strict about how long guys could keep their hair. They could, after all, as long as they kept it tied back.

“There’s my handsome boy.” He rolled his eyes as his mom grabbed him and planted kisses all over his cheek. “Mom, please.” She chuckled to herself as they sat down for breakfast. “Sooner or later, I won’t be able to do that anymore. So just let me enjoy it while I can.”

--

Taemin waited at the bus stop underneath his umbrella. Various students chattered away about things that were happening at school. “Did you hear? We’re getting a new temporary English teacher.” Taemin glanced in that direction for a moment before returning his gaze back to the front. His best friends had graduated a few years before him.

When the bus came, all the students rushed onto it, thankful for the cover from the rain. Taemin sat in a row near the back by himself, greeting other people as they said hi to him. As the bus rolled away to leave though, he saw a man rush to the bus stop with a brief case over his head. In a split second decision, Taemin pulled down the window before handing him his umbrella.

“Here! Take it!” The strange looked at him bewildered for a moment, but took the umbrella anyway as Taemin waved with a smile and pulled his hand inside and closing the window before his sleeve got too wet from the rain.

He watched the strange open up the umbrella and watch as the bus rolled away before slipping on the edge of the curb and falling into a puddle. Taemin sighed. It didn’t look like it did much good to give him the umbrella anyway.

--

Taemin shook the raindrops from his uniform and his hair as he wiped his feet on the mats at school. He didn’t want to slip and fall somewhere. “What happened to your umbrella Taemin? I thought I saw you holding one at the bus stop.” Taemin grinned and brushed away stray strands of hair. “I saw someone who needed it more than me.”

The bell rang, signaling the students to hurry to class. Taemin shut his locker and hurried off to his first class.

--

By his last class period, everyone seemed to be half asleep, or asleep on their desks. The rain seemed to make that kind of sleepy atmosphere. Taemin just wished he was at home curled up comfortably in his bed watching the rain drops fall down his window.

The principal walked into the classroom and cleared his throat. “As you all know, your English teacher will be on maternity leave until the end of the school year. As such, we have found a replacement for you. Please welcome Mr. Lee.”

Taemin glanced over bored at the man that walked into the door and was suddenly surprised. It was the man from the bus stop. His clothes looked a little bit dryer, and he shyly nodded to the class before bowing and introducing himself.

He could hear the girls whispering amongst themselves and caught words like “young” and “cute” floating around. He rolled his eyes again before catching the eyes of the new temporary teacher. His mouth made a slight ‘o’ before his eyes brightened and sent a smile in Taemin’s direction.

--

Taemin was the last out of the class simply because he didn’t enjoy being pushed in the crowd as everyone rushed to leave. He leisurely packed his things and didn’t notice when the teacher had appeared in front of him.

“You’re Lee Taemin right?” Taemin looked up to see his teacher smiling brightly at him. “Yes. It’s nice to meet you.”

“I just wanted to thank you. You know, for this morning. Here.” Taemin finished packing up his things and stood up to see Mr. Lee holding out his umbrella for him.

“Are you headed home now too Mr. Lee?”

“Jinki. Just call me Jinki. I’m not your teacher after school.” Taemin smiled sheepishly and took the umbrella anyway.

“But yes, I’m headed home now too.”

“Same bus?”

“Same bus.”

“Then let’s go together. I’d hate for you to catch a cold on your first day teaching.” Taemi smiled at him away before leaving the classroom first. Jinki turned and watch the other boy walk out, adjusting his glasses. Taemin didn’t seem to notice how red Jinki’s ears had turned.

“Taemin... do you not remember me?” He said to himself quietly. He picked up his briefcase from his desk and was startled when the boy in question popped his head back into the classroom. “Are you coming Jinki hyung?”

--

They sat next to each other in silence on the bus, Taemin staring out at the drenched world on the outside. “You look really young for a teacher,” he said, turning his gaze from the sidewalk to the man beside him. “You give off this vibe like you’re my age or something. Like a friend.”

Jinki fidgeted in his seat. “I get that a lot... truth is, I’m really not that much older than you guys.” Taemin nodded. “Must be hell trying to control your students then huh?”

“You wouldn’t believe it.” Taemin laughed. Hearing his laugh, Jinki couldn’t help but let the sound wash over him. Taemin couldn’t quite put his finger on it, but Jinki seemed very familiar to him. But before he could question the other man about it, the bus pulled into his stop. “Oh! This is my stop.” He stood up and started to leave.

“Wait! Your umbrella!”

“Just keep it, I live pretty close to here.” Taemin gave Jinki a thumbs up before hurrying off of the bus and making a dash for his house. Jinki watched from the window before banging his head on it. “Stupid, stupid, stupid. You’re a teacher now, you can’t be doing stupid stuff like that...”

--

As the days turned to weeks, the weather seemed to clear up finally. There were blue skies again, and white fluffy clouds that dotted the blue expanse. A gently breeze whipped through Taemin’s hair as he sat in class. The windows were always open in his English class.

Jinki seemed to get accustomed to teaching. He was gaining more and more respect when students realized he wasn’t a pushover, and that he actually knew what he was talking about when he was teaching.

Taemin paid attention in his class, but he was barely understanding anything. He hated the way Jinki pursed his lips whenever he answered a question wrong in class.

One day after class, Jinki approached the boy again. “Hey Taemin. I noticed you were having a hard time in class today.” Taemin sighed and ran a hand through his bangs. “Yeah. I’m totally not understanding anything. It’s like it’s all in a foreign language to me.” Jinki laughed. “Because it IS in a foreign language.”

Taemin rolled his eyes as Jinki laughed some more, patting the boy on the shoulder. “Well, if you ever have questions, you can always ask me. It’s not like I’m going to bite your head off. I can tutor you after school if you want.”

Taemin thought about it for a second. “Well, I wouldn’t want to trouble you but...”

“It’s no problem. No problem at all.”

--

A few weeks had passed since Jinki took to tutoring Taemin after school. Taemin always stayed after class for a little bit of extra help, and his grades were definitely improving. He left the class one day after school, only to be followed by another group of students.

“Hey faggot.” Taemin stopped in his tracks and whirled around. “What did you just call me?”

“You heard me. Getting pretty buddy, buddy with the new teacher aren’t you?” The biggest kid picked up Taemin by his blazer and slammed him into the wall. “He’s tutoring me. What’s it you? Seems like you’re the faggot for getting jealous.”

That smart remark earned him a punch to the face, and he could feel blood pooling into his mouth. He jerked his knee out, making the other guy howl in pain and drop him immediately. “Only faggots keep their hair long like that.”

“Your mom has long hair. Does that make her one too?” There were yells of anger and a few more blows landed on both sides before a voice broke apart their fighting. Jinki hauled the two students off of Taemin and helped the other boy up. He looked appalled at the others that just watched them fight.

“You have five seconds to get out of my sight before I have you all reported.” One of the bullies gave Taemin a look of disgust and glared at him. “This isn’t over.” All of them hurried off, leaving a battered Taemin to Jinki.

“Jesus, are you okay?” Taemin pushed Jinki’s arms off of him and stood up, wiping away the blood on his lip. “Nothing new. Figured they stop senior year.” Jinki gave him such a sad expression, but Taemin was too angry to notice.

“The nurses office is closed. At least let me take you home and help clean you up.”

“No thanks. You’ve done enough.” Jinki looked absolutely crushed as Taemin stomped off.

Taemin stopped staying after school for tutoring. His grades in Jinki’s class were steadily dropping. Jinki couldn’t help but give the boy sad looks every time he was in class. Taemin didn’t even make eye contact with him anymore. This was the last thing Jinki wanted.

--

“Mom! I’m ho- What are you doing here?” Taemin asked in mid-sentence. Jinki was sitting across from his mother at the dining table with a smile on his face.

“Now, Taemin. That’s not the way to talk to your teacher. I was concerned about your behavior and your grades in class, so I called your teacher.” Taemin sighed. He had five other teachers. And the one she had to call was Jinki? He didn’t really have anything against the man, he just figured it would be a good idea to stay away from him lest he be beaten up again.

“And he’s agreed to tutor you at home.” Taemin’s eyes widened. Tutor him at home? He was silent for a moment. “Yeah, whatever.” He let his backpack slip off of his shoulder and dragged it to his room without another word.

A few minutes later, there was a soft knocking at his door. “Mind if I come in?” Taemin finished changing into a comfortable pair of pants and a t-shirt. “No. Come in.” Jinki pushed the door open and closed it behind him, looking around his room before his eyes finally settled on Taemin on the floor at his desk, homework scattered across the top.

Jinki sat down next to him quietly. Taemin didn’t take any notice to him. Jinki didn’t say anything for a while, and neither did Taemin until he felt arms snake around his waist and Jinki lay his head on his shoulder. “I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you that day.”

Taemin froze. His heart beat incredibly fast, and suddenly the temperature in the room went up. “Mr. Lee. What are you doing?”

“I’m not your teacher outside of school remember?” Since Taemin didn’t run away from him, Jinki sat up straight, pulling the other boy onto his lap, letting Taemin rest his head on the crook of his neck. Taemin tensed up in his lap. “You really don’t remember who I am?” Jinki asked as the boy sat up to look at his face.

Taemin squinted at Jinki for a moment, trying to remember. Jinki glanced over at Taemin’s umbrella in the corner of his room. “That’s not the first umbrella you’ve given me.” Then it clicked.

Flashback

--

Jinki was in his last and final year at the school. That day was particularly rainy, and he completely forgot to bring an umbrella. He thought about making a run for it, but he was definitely going to end up slipping and falling if he tried.

“Sunbae, are you stuck in the rain? Wanna share an umbrella?” He turned, startled to see a first year next to him, smiling like the sun. He didn’t think there was anyone left at the school. “What are you doing here so late?”

“Getting tutoring. I’m so bad at English.” He sighed, but his expression turned back to happiness as he held the umbrella higher to get Jinki underneath. “On the count of three, make a run for the bus stop!” Jinki didn’t even get to protest as the boy shouted the numbers and ran. Jinki did his best to keep up with him and not fall, but as they rounded the corner, he could feel himself slipping. Suddenly, there was an arm grabbing him, pulling him up before he could fall.

“Hurry up! The bus is about to leave!” The two boys hurried onto the bus and sat down next to each other out of breath and laughing. “You almost fell into that puddle! Then there would’ve been no point to the umbrella.”

The two talked about nothing for a while until the boy exclaimed that his stop was here, getting up to leave. “Wait! Your umbrella!”

“Keep it! I live close to here!” He smiled and hurried off of the bus, making a dash for his home. Jinki watched him leave from the window, before turning back and looking at the umbrella. Written on the handle was a name.

Lee Taemin.

For days after that, he never did see Taemin again. He caught glances of him in the hallways sometimes, and after school he’d wait around to see if he would spot the boy leaving. A few times he did, and he was always determined to thank him for that day, return his umbrella, and confess his feelings. But each time he got scared and chickened out.

End

--

“That was you?” Taemin whispered in disbelief. Jinki just nodded, enjoying the closeness of the boy he fell in love with. “I... don’t know what to say.”

“Then don’t say anything,” Jinki said before closing the distance between their faces with a soft and tender kiss. Taemin’s eyes widened for a second before he closed them and wrapped his arms around Jinki’s neck.

They kissed until they ran out of breath and pulled apart, slightly panting. “So... does this mean we’re dating now?” Taemin buried his face into Jinki’s chest as Jinki played with his fingers.

“I would hope so. Even though student teacher relationships are forbidden at school. So we wouldn’t be able to display much affection at school. Unless you’re into that kind of thing.” Jinki laughed as Taemin whipped his head up, blushing furiously.

“But I’m only a temporary teacher, and after school is done for the year, I won’t be your teacher anymore.” Taemin smiled and planted another soft kiss on Jinki’s lips.

“I have a question. Now that we’re dating, does that mean I still have to do your homework?”
