Escape

--

By day, he was music major Kim Jonghyun. Nothing was too special about him besides his good looks and amazing voice. He played a variety of instruments, some of which he taught to make a few extra dollars on the side. The only reason anyone would even take a second glance at him would be if he were smiling his trademark crooked grin. No one could resist that.

But by night, he was a master cat burglar with no name. Nothing was safe from him as long as he wanted it. There was no need for him to be steal precious items. His parents worked in security and made a fair sum of money. He did it just because he could, and because he liked baffling the authorities. It was his way of sticking it to the man.

“Jonghyun. Jonghyun. Jonghyun?” Lee Jinki, his tutor, shook his shoulder a few times with an expectant look in his eyes. Jonghyun jerked out of his daze and looked over at him with sleepy eyes. “Didn’t get much sleep last night?” He said with laughter in his voice.

“Why aren’t you a music major Jinki? Your voice is absolutely amazing.” Jonghyun rolled over onto the open textbooks and laid his head on his arm. The older boy laughed again as he leaned over to look at Jonghyun’s face in the space between his arms.

“Does it matter? If you wanted to spend more time with me, you could’ve just said so.” Jonghyun lifted his head up and scoffed at the smiling boy. “I dread the time I spend with you. What makes you think I would want to see more of you?” His real thoughts though were opposite of everything that just came out of his mouth.

Jonghyun was absolutely in love with the other boy. His unending patience, his expressions when he was thinking about something far away, the way he laughed, the way his eyes disappeared when he smiled. He loved it all. Every now and then, he thought about telling the other boy, but he always chickened out.

Yes, even a master cat burglar had things that made him nervous. And that certain thing was sitting across from him frowning at his test reviews. “Jjong, did you even try at all on these? I know I went over all of these with you...” His eyes returned to Jonghyun whose eyes were closed. Soft snores were emitting from his body as he slept.

Jinki looked at the other boy in disbelief. It was only three in the afternoon. Instead of being mad, he just smiled at him fondly and brushed away some hair out of his face. He must’ve had a long night last night. In fact, Jinki knew he had a long night last night. He smiled to himself as he tapped the pencil on the desk. Jonghyun was really cute when he was flustered. There was only a matter of time before he would figure out.

Flashback

--

At midnight, Jonghyun disabled the security system in his house and left quietly, playing security footage on loop. His parents went a little bit overboard with the security systems, but Jonghyun wasn’t as stupid as he let other people think he was. The only reason he was even being tutored was because he liked seeing a certain boy’s face every day.

He wore all black, tight clothing with a black bandanna hiding the bottom of his face, and a backwards black cap. He had various state of the art equipment (courtesy of his parents) tucked in his clothes and the small bag he wore on his back.

He slipped out of the balcony window, unaware that there was someone following his every move.

--

He arrived at his destination, the city art museum was displaying an ancient weapons exhibit with a samurai sword over a hundred years old. Jonghyun thought it was pretty cool when Jinki took him to go see it the day before and made a mental note.

He avoided the outdoor lights and security cameras before pulling out a grappling hook and throwing it onto the one spot on the wall where the cameras couldn’t reach. He scaled the wall and treaded carefully on the roof, careful not to make too much noise or activate the security system.

His parents did security for the museum as well, so he knew the ins and outs of all the devices being used and where they were placed and how to disable and avoid them. He used his cutters and cut out a small panel of glass, big enough for him to slip through above the sword. He tied off his rope to the top of the building and laced it into his harness before lowering himself down into the museum.

He stood silently in the middle of the empty place. Everything seemed so much eerier cast in a red glow. He walked silently towards the sword until a shadow caught his eye. He whipped around and was faced by someone else, also in all black, bandanna across his face and a low cap. Shocked, he fell back and tripped an alarm system.

He cursed to himself as the figure gave him a mocking salute before disappearing down a corridor. Jonghyun glanced back at the sword. He didn’t have time to break into the case to get it now. He pulled himself back up quickly and packed away his things before leaving the place quietly. Soon after, cops coming from every direction.

He sighed as he watched them surround the museum. What a waste of a night. He made the trek back home, climbing back up the balcony from the rose trellis and mentally cursed when he cut himself on thorn.

He pulled himself up on the balcony and made his way inside, pulling off his disguise and clothes and changing into sweats and a t-shirt. He hid his things in a secret compartment in his closet, with the rest of the things he’d managed to steal over the years.

Running his hand through his hair, he was about to head to bed when he saw a black figure standing on his balcony, leaning on the railing with his arms across his chest. Jonghyun squinted and headed towards the balcony.

“Who the hell are you? What are you doing on my property?!” The figure stood up and Jonghyun could see him silently chuckle. “You... you’re the guy from the museum!” Suddenly he stepped in closer to Jonghyun and tilted his head to the side. Suddenly, Jonghyun got really nervous. His heart started beating faster. It all seemed so familiar.

Jonghyun tried to get a look at his face, but he always angled it so he would catch flashes of his eyes, but not enough to make a positive identification. He leaned in closer to Jonghyun’s face and whispered playfully in his ear.

“My name is Onew.” And in a flash, he was gone over the railing. Jonghyun was only frozen for a moment before he ran to the railing to see where he had gone. But there was no one in sight. He cursed himself for not turning on the security system as soon as he got home.

End

--

Night after night, that stranger named Onew kept following him. Each time he didn’t say anything, but Jonghyun felt the sense of mockery radiating from his body from the playful flashes of his face whenever he foiled another one of Jonghyun’s attempted and escaped. Eventually, he was just too tired to deal with it anymore and stopped going out in the middle of the night.

Now, the only thing he looked forward to was spending time with Jinki and his tutoring sessions. Even if he didn’t really need them and was wasting their time. “You look unusually well rested today.” Jinki put his books down on the cafe table and smiled his usual smile Jonghyun chuckled to himself and took a sip of his coffee.

“I’ve been getting more sleep than usual.” Jinki glanced at the newspaper that was spread open over Jonghyun’s textbooks. “Oh. Seems like that cat burglar’s been losing their touch.” Jonghyun stiffened a little bit. “Well maybe he’s distracted. Everyone had their off days.” Jinki sat back in the seat and leaned on his hand.

“What makes you think it’s a guy? It could be a girl.” Jonghyun shook his head. “No way. Someone of this much skill has to be a guy.” Jinki shrugged his shoulders and gave him an amused smile. “Seems like you know a lot about this guy.” Jonghyun choked on his coffee for a moment before putting his cup down.

“I’m just a fan really,” he said coolly trying to play it off. Jinki’s musical laughter reached his ears again. “I’m a little bit of a fan too.” Jonghyun’s expression turned wary as Jinki stared off into space again. He tried to hide the crawling smile on his face. Jinki was a fan of his?

“Well anyway, let’s get to studying. Your physics grade sucks more than black holes.”

--

It was the middle of the night, and Jonghyun couldn’t sleep. The rain fell against his balcony door with soft pats as he sat on his bed strumming out a soft melody. His thoughts turned to a certain brunette, and a smile pulled onto his face. Lightning flashed, followed by a crash of thunder that startled him. He glanced out the window, and in the pouring rain, he saw the figure that plagued him standing in the rain, leaned up against the railing.

Jonghyun placed his guitar down and headed out towards the balcony and turned on the light. He didn’t cover his face this time, only keeping his cap low to his head. Jonghyun saw the familiar amused smile on his face and almost died on the spot.

He opened the door and walked up to Onew, not caring that he was getting wet from the rain. He reached over and pulled off the cap, revealing a very amused and wet Jinki. His eyes caught the drops that fell over his features. Jinki grinned a crooked grin and ran his hand through his hair.

“So I lied. I’m a little bit more than a fan.” Jonghyun rolled his eyes as Jinki pulled him closer, pressing his forehead against the other boy’s.

“You know you’re flattered.” Jonghyun’s heart raced as he pressed their bodies together in the cold rain.

“I’d say... I’m a little bit more than flattered.” Jonghyun pressed their lips together in the rain. It seemed like forever before they parted.

“Come inside, and I’ll take those wet clothes off of you.” Jinki raised an eyebrow with a laugh as Jonghyun grabbed his hand and dragged him inside. “I’m not letting you escape this time.”
