They really needed to make a grinding stone.
Not that Sokka can't sharpen his boomerang by other means. The Southern Tribe didn't have a grinding stone so he usually used strips of leather and flat rocks, but the grinding stone was so much easier and did the job so much faster! And his boomerang was getting regular use here, making him worry about it getting dull. So there he sits in the room shared with Katara, though where his sister is, Sokka isn't sure. A rock is being used to sharpen the boomerang, followed by a smooth strip of leather - the rock part makes an awful noise that anyone out in the hallway should be able to hear, though Sokka sits in the window so the noise isn't quite as loud as it could be.
