What this world needs is another cop

"Randy, I want you to take the far corner and come around the back. We surround Matthews. He won't have any place to hide." Stottlemeyer waited a single beat for the young lieutenant to answer. "Randy? You hear me?" He turned around, cursing when he saw Randy gone. "Disher ( Read more... )

Lucky for Stottlemeyer, Monk is on patrol.

He's pacing back and forth cautiously along the rooftop, eyes scanning the lifeless city that lay before him. No danger had presented itself in days; Monk couldn't even remember he saw anyone wandering around the city without purpose, but then something catches his eye.

Someone.

He squints and can just make out the figure of a man standing a considerable distance away, and he can't make out the face but he knows it's definitely a man.

Maybe a vampire. He clutches the stake that he's holstered onto his belt (right next to his gun) at the thought, brows furrowing with concern. Could be Harth. Doesn't look like him, though - maybe Krycek.

Monk has to get this over with sometime, so with a deep breath, he leaves his post and makes his way through the building, back down to the ground, and emerges from the gate.

Easy, Adrian, easy, becomes his new mantra as he walks slowly, steps softly and deliberately placed on the ground. Be careful...

Gun and stake are both at the ready.

...the HELL???

He draws his gun, holds it out towards the man steadily approaching, clicks the safety off.

"Get behind me, Monk!" Good makeup job on the guy, but Stottlemeyer has seen better. As a San Francisco cop, he's seen it all.

And this guy is seriously deranged.

If he can just take him down, everything will be fine.

He shoots two quick rounds, not aiming to kill. Slow the guy down. Buy enough time for the both of them to get the hell out of there.

Krycek throws his head back and laughs.

Oh, silly humans and their silly guns!

"Can't take me down," he yells, dodging the bullets with ease. "Should know that by now. Monk, didn't you explain this to your friend, here?"

He's still pretty far away, and isn't about to pick up speed.

He's also still weak, although he refuses to let it show.

Monk turns to run but when the Captain tells him to get behind him, he stops and turns back around with a determined expression; he even goes so far as to step in front of Stottlemeyer.

This is his battle, after all, and he's going to show the Captain - his Captain - that he's a changed man.

"Krycek," he says, voice a loud but low growl. "Don't even think about it. This is between you and me, no one else."

There's a pause as Monk takes a step foward, hand moving to grip the stake at his side. "Made this especially for you," he calls. "You gonna give me reason to use it?"

"What are you...? Monk...you can't just...waltz out and...say that...without...thinking..." The Captain's sputtering phrases to cover up his confusion.

This Monk....

He remembers this Monk. The one when Trudy was still alive and he had the confidence and smarts to carry himself far up the ranks. God, Monk could've been captain if only...

But that's the past, stuck only in memories.

"Let's get outta here." He grabs Monk by the shoulders and roughly shoves him in the opposite direction as Krycek, then starts a desperate, loping jog. "What kinda stunt was that, Monk? You could've been killed!"

Monk actually fights against the shove, narrowed, vengeful eyes locked on Krycek, and he screams one more threat at the vampire before allowing himself to be dragged off. "THIS ISN'T OVER!"

Once they're out of range, however, Monk takes a deep breath to calm himself and he relaxes his tensed up muscles.

"Bastard," he mutters under his breath as he jogs alongside Stottlemeyer. "That was that vampire I was telling you about."

Obviously.

Stottlemeyer takes a moment to look behind him. "He's not coming after us." He's shocked but not about to complain. Small miracles might not happen very often in this damn place.

Oh God, he's starting to believe.

"What the hell did you do to piss him off?" They're heading back towards the apartment building Monk pointed out earlier. "This is perfect, Monk. Just perfect. You have a goddamned vampire after you. You know something? I give up." He sighs, steadying himself for what he needs to say. "You never steered me wrong before, Monk. And this is gonna sound really off-the-wall considering what you just told me about your 'friend' back there...I believe you."

"Found out that he was up to no good," Monk grumbles, remembering all the pain Krycek put him through, mentally and physically.

He then glances at Stottlemeyer from the side of his eye, and after a moment turns his head to fully look at him with an intensity he's sure the captain's never seen before.

"I know it sounds crazy, but you have to believe me. It's the only way you'll survive. This place is dangerous, Leland, and if you falter for so much as a second, you can end up caught up in something out of your own nightmares."

Monk knows this for a fact, and he had to learn the hard way.

"'Up to no good.' Well that's as good a reason as any, I guess." So this place, the environment itself was calling Monk's protective cop instincts back up after years of suppression?

He hated to admit it to himself, but this ruined place actually seemed healthy for Monk. It did for Monk what years of therapy couldn't, put him in a situation he couldn't escape from, a place he needed to adapt in.

It's a goddamned miracle.

"I can see this place is dangerous, Monk. You said other people live here? Good. Strength in numbers." And if Monk could survive here...

"Think they got room for another body?"

His intense expression slowly but surely melds back into a smile.

"Always do," he says. "If not, there's room in my apartment."

Yes, Captain, that's an open invitation to room with Monk.

"Listen, I..." he begins, although is unsure of how to continue. He sighs softly and runs a hand through his hair, then looks to Stottlemeyer with warm, happy eyes, and a fond smile. "I'm sorry I attacked you back there, but... you have no idea how good it is to see you again, Cap."

"If you think I'm gonna room with you again, Monk..." He starts off warningly, then eases back. A ruined world. And that means his job as a police captain doesn't exist anymore. He needed shelter, badly.

Well, at least it didn't look like anyone had to pay rent.

"For a second there, Monk, I thought you were a hallucination. Something my mind made up. You don't...well...you didn't act that way before. I mean...that tackle?" He grinned mildly. "And the way you stood up to Yellow-eyes back there? You still got it in you, Monk. I'm...I'm proud of you."

Monk snickers faintly when the captain trails off. "I promise it won't be like that," he says, voice soft and assuring.

And then, then it looks like someone's stuck an air pump into Monk and started pumping away, because his chest swells up and he gets this dumb, proud grin on his face.

"Thanks, Captain," he beams.
