Sam's face is all watery, eyes all red and puffy. She tries to rub at them, which makes it worse. "Nothing. No."

"Oh honey, I know you're upset, you know you're upset, let's skip the part where I coax you into admitting it and get right to the part where you tell me what's wrong, okay?"

Irene kneels next to Sam, hovering but not touching, all motherly concern.

"Trust me. I have mastered the art of hiding the upset, and it is good for no woman."

Sam looks at her, all waveringly, and bursts into tears again.

"He's gone and he might be dead and no one even wants to look for him and..." Choked sob. "I can't do it on my own, I'm not strong enough, I failed--"

She buries her head into her knees again.
