Every now and then the nations swap genders, dependant on how the nation is personified by it's people or if a new nation is about to be formed/settled by two others.

UK spent a lot of his teen years as lady Briannia, for example.

My horrid headcanon: Norway genderswapped and is actually Iceland's mother. Denmark is the father.

I have no idea where the head-canon came from or why it won't leave me. Anons, please point out it's flaws so that it will leave me forever ;__;

Nah, it's a neat idea! I mean, what shapes the characters in Hetalia is what their people think, right? I thought for a bit that maybe most of the nations are male in the series because male means ~dominant~ and people want their nation to be ~the best~, buuuut I can really see them as gender-neutral, or appearing sometimes female and sometimes male. Like in old political cartoons, half the time England was John Bull and half the time it was Lady Britannia. (: It's just silly to have a personification that doesn't represent 50% of its population, really.

In my headcanon, nations usually only have one parent. Their other parent is their "homeland"

...which isn't that fucked up, until I imagine Grandpa Rome and Germania fucking the soil T_T
