Personal notes:
Okay, I'm late. I had a serious lack of inspiration then, wandering through the webs about the Festa Della Repubblica I saw it had been called the 'Festa degli Italiani' (Italian Festival) so I decided to draw the WHOLE Italian gang. In the beginning I thought at Romano & Veneziano plus their Regions I went for all their APHversions. Technically Rome shouldn't have been added but well, this is APH. He can come and join the party.
History:
Italy became a republic due to the institutional referendum held by universal suffrage in 1946 (2 & 3 June), in which the Italians were called to the polls to decide on the form of government. With 12,717,923 votes for a republic and 10,719,284 for the monarchy the republic won and the male descendants of the House of Savoy were sent on exile.
At the time there were many discussions if the refeendum should have been considered valid (many Italians weren't back yet in Italy and therefore couldn't vote) and if the vote counting had been regular.
Celebration are pretty simple. There's a military parade, a ceremonial laying of a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Vittoriano, in the afternoon with the gardens of the Quirinale Palace are open and there are musical performances by the band ensembles of the Italian army. Also the Frecce Tricolori usually show how good they are and trace a giant Italian flag in the sky with their coloured smokes.
Representatives of other countries usually take part to the celebration.
This day is a national holiday, though it had started to be so only rcently.
