Fic, ships, and plain old niceness

Open post. Please be polite in comments (no bashing, etc...)

I have an f-list that's mostly full of Chloe fans who ship all different pairings and some non-shippers. And you know what's always been cool about Chloe fans? We have stuck together for years regardless of ships because we all agree on one thing: Chloe is a great character who drew us in ( Read more... )

I KNOW! First they said no one was leaving and it was all a rumor and then they said Sheehan WAS leaving and some guy named Rudy's replacing Nathan and they said they were going to have an online minisode to send Nathan off and introduce this guy and now they're saying Robert won't even be in it and we'll never see Nathan again and now I'm forgetting that punctuation exists because my heart's broken!

I'm still going to give it a chance, but I am so saaaaad.

LOL! I love that analogy and word to this whole post. Personally I don't see how you can NOT multi ship Chloe. I like to whore her out to every hottie I think she has chemistry with (or may have chemistry with)

And I would totally read that wet noodle fanfic, except I get squicky about Chlart. It's hard for me not to see him as a kid.

Also, I think multi shipping Chloe helps the writer get the FULL Chloe ... if that makes any sense.

Yes. Yes it does.

Total sense.

I like to see other angles and possibilities with her because she really is the most complex and interesting character on SV for me. So what would she do here? Or here? Or with this guy? I honestly think I got Chloe more after I thought about her reactions to different situations and ship scenarios.

Honestly, lots of my friends multi-ship. I also do (though Chlark is king, if you can't tell by the Chlark vs. Chlanybodyelse count). So when someone says multishipping is whorish, I feel like I'm being called a whoremonger. And I guess I kind of am. It's insulting.

I also get that way about Chlart. I love to have him say hilariously crushy things to her. But I draw the line after that.

I can't believe anyone would think you wrote a Smallville character out of character.

Of course, I've gotten so used to thinking that your characterizations are what should be canon that I may not have the most objective perspective on this issue.

This is not so much about my fic (though apparently, I write Ollie as a jerk). I've hardly ever had a nasty bit of feedback ot non-constructive criticism. Maybe a couple anonymice who left nasties. But most people understand that you just don't do that.

It's about blanket statements about how people of certain ships shouldn't write for other ships because they don't have the right if they don't ship it exclusively.

And thank you! I try to think hard about what I have them do and say in my fic. I put a lot of thought into what I write. So it burns to be told I have no right to write this or that.

Well, Ollie can be an asshole. So can Chloe. Are we not true shippers if we don't ignore the character's flaws?

Let's get one thing straight, no one, NO ONE, is allowed to write Chloe with the entire JL in a vat of wet noodles, because...
1.) Noodles' OTP is Marinara Sauce.
2.) Nothing, not even noodles, can remain limp with all that sezzinezz, although they'll definitely be wet.

On topic: I feel that people who attack artistic endeavors don't really understand or enjoy fanwork. They may create it or consume it, but they don't like it and they don't really get anything out of it. They just want to use it as a reason to talk about their ship. And if that's the case, just post about how much you love your ship and have those that agree with you comment with, "They're the BEST!" and then you can respond "I know!"

Heh. Kind of wish they'd stick to that, then. Everyone would be in harmony if nobody played elitist.

I am nothing if not open minded (and refuse to respond to your noodle shipping arrogance in kind), so... Vat of dry rice? No. Or how about cooked Rizotto? Wait, that's whorish. I'll find it...

Great post! I understand not wanting to read certain pairings or certain types of things in fic. I just can't read Smallville anymore, even written by some of my favorite authors, because it forcibly reminds me of how dismayed I am by the show direction and decline in quality. In other fandoms I enjoy, there are still pairings I usually don't enjoy. However, I would feel it absurd for me to dictate to others that they should write to my personal preferences ( ... )

"First on my list: Jane Austen continuations."
Oh I do love Austen, almost as much as I love George Elliot. You are quite funny, so I think you could do Austen well.

"I think my issue with this was not that the author was trying to say what they'd rather see in fic, but the implication (or outright saying) that certain people don't deserve to write in their ship."
Yeah it's one thing to know your preferences, or to talk about what makes stories compelling, it's another to devalue people and other viewpoints.

Nail approaches head and.... IT'S A HIT!

I hope I can serve Austen well. I keep flirting with an Anne De Burgh piece that might solve all my perceived P&P loose ends.

I try not to touch it as I have so many SV WIPS, but I've been escaping into Austen for months now.
