open letter to my characters

I have a college professor in my head when I sit down to write fiction. He says, "What's the conflict?" "What do the characters want?" But what happens when everything they want is too easy? So true!

I know we all have our moments where we think "man, these characters could just solve their problems by communicating," but deep down, we want that drama or the story wouldn't engage us half as much.

I have been stuck for a few months where I can't even imagine what their conflicts could or should be. I just keep thinking in my head "what's their conflict" over and over again. I hope writing about it will help me get over it!
