Last Friday, my boyfriend and I went on Chicago Food Planet's Near North Walking Tour.  Strangely enough, most of the people on our tour (including us) were "locals" looking to explore some new neighborhoods and sample some typically Chicago cuisine. In addition to walking for three hours and hearing about some architectural history, we sampled ( Read more... )

Flavored sugars can be used anywhere you already use reg sugar - baking, coffee, teas, etc. Since Vanilla and Lavender are innocuous flavors/fragrances, it should be a fun experience. I'm not a tea or coffee drinker so I can't personally vouch for those, but I've had some sort of cake that used lavender sugar instead of reg sugar. I'm not a cake person, but it was tasty and smelled great! There was another cake with rose sugar, but I couldn't really taste or smell it.

The Spice House sounds like it smells AMAZING. Envious.

I guess I was thinking that adding the flavored sugar would compete too much with the other flavors of whatever I would bake with it, but it might be fun to experiment and see what works. I did use some in my Earl Grey tea and it added a nice flavor.

I don't know where you are (ie, how far from Chicago) but if you're ever in this part of the Midwest, you should just walk in the door of The Spice House and breathe in.

I did end up going back to the tea place with the intent to buy something, but it so expensive. They had one flavor that I might go back and get someday. It was called Arabian Nights - a blend of black and green teas, and I forgot what other flavors. They passed a cup of it (the dry leaves) around for us on the tour and it smelled amazing. Maybe once I get a job....

I'll have to check that place out. Forest Park isn't too far away from me.
