Day 09 - Best scene ever - Twin Peaks, Episode 26, Shelly Johnson & Gordon Cole kiss
Okay, perhaps an odd scene to choose as best ever. There are certainly others that popped to mind when I was trying to make my choice. Passion from BtVS comes to mind when Angel kills a Jenny Calendar who is trying to redeem herself. The scene in Angel when Angel signs away his Shanshu is another. The scene in X-Files when Mulder first looks upon William. The scene in Veronica Mars where she realizes who raped her in Season 1 and why. And on and on my list of contenders went.
I choose *this* scene, however, because Shelly is such a tragic character in a way. Teen bride to an abusive husband, starts having an affair with high school jock/hero who as it turns out isn't *that* much different from the husband. He may not hit her, but he's clearly out for himself in life and doesn't seem to have any qualms about leaving her behind when he thinks he's found a better paying meal ticket in the Horne business.
So, this scene between Gordon & Shelly, a stranger who walks in and is instantly taken with her when he sees her, coupled with the fact that he can HEAR her (as he can no one else) ... I have hope that Shelly will realize there are good guys out there. Guys who will sit and have pie with her, make her laugh and smile, and not treat her poorly. I'd like to think that this scene is a turning point for her.
Besides, who can resist such a line as this: HELLO. I WAS WONDERING IF I MIGHT TROUBLE YOU FOR A CUP OF STRONG BLACK COFFEE AND IN THE PROCESS ENGAGE YOU WITH AN ANECDOTE OF NO SMALL AMUSEMENT. THE NAME IS GORDON COLE AND I COULDN'T HELP BUT NOTICE YOU FROM THE BOOTH. AND...WELL, SEEING YOUR BEAUTY NOW I FEEL AS THOUGH MY STOMACH IS FILLED WITH A TEAM OF BUMBLEBEES.
(And no, the fact that David Lynch himself plays Gordon Cole has nothing to do with my decision, hehe)
