Glad you unlocked this. It was good, but I already agree with you. To me, believers seem like adults who still believe in Santa Clause. Their belief seems alien and doesn't make sense to me on any level.

I've always found the argument that there are no ethics outside of religion to be bizarre. But I'm curious what you mean about the internal-critique method?

For better or worse, my own ethical decisions are made instinctively rather than with a method, so I'm curious to hear about a more formal Godless process of ethics.

An external criticism of a belief system is one that is based upon the standards or words of a separate belief system. For example, a Christian criticism of Sartre. Internal criticism, by contrast, applies the standards of a given belief system to critique the same system. For example, Foucault was a misogynist fuck, but I can look at his own writings and say that women are oppressed in precisely the ways he describes. It's a technique that's particularly persuasive and powerful.

I'm not explaining that well, I don't think.

Hi there. I think I would enjoy your journal. Would you mind adding me? I saw your comment on Mike's (lj user=alchemi) entry about the perky blonde and thought we might have some things in common.

I've added you. And, yes, reading over your journal, I see so, so much that looks familiar. It's totally appalling the way women are expected to apologize for their own attractiveness and sexuality.

Years back? Like around 1989?

If you've looked at my journal already then you've figured out that I'm back teaching at Manual now.

Later than that. I used to know some Bardstown Road / hardcore type kids, which I think is why your name sounds familiar.

I must congratulate you on joining the very small ranks of younger Manual teachers. I can only think of four from my time there and I know at least two of those have since left.
