I tend to buy a spreadable butter solely for the purpose of buttering the bread before putting it in the pan. It is the only way to get buttery goodness in every artery-clogging bite.
Of course, I only use the butter spreads made from real veggie oil, not the ones made from partially hydroginated oils. Hydroginated Oils = Bad.
