My god.

That was an 8.8, which is a really fucking strong earthquake. And they've issued tsunami warnings all over the Pacific. Here, too, which is how I found out about it in the first place ( Read more... )

Australia's on tsunami alert, but we're not coastal, so we're fine. Apparently, it's just reaching New Zealand now and will be to the east coast of Australia in an hour or so. Very scary global stuff.

Luckily my area isn't in the line of that and the earthquakes we get are so very minor they barely count. This really is terrible though, especially since relief organizations are still recovering from the effort put into Haiti and now they are needed again without getting any break.

Look. I know I live in Minneapolis, and it's fucking cold and in the middle of nowhere etc etc, but nothing bad will ever happen here. I mean, okay, we did have 35W collapse. I did get some frantic calls on that one. But I kind of want everyone to pack up and move here, because like, no war, no earthquakes, no tsunamis, no tornadoes (well not in years and years anyhow), no hurricanes.

Thankfully it does look like where you live is just outside the area of dissipation, but consider Minnesota. It's safe and not as boring as one may think.

I just found out, thanks to the modern miracle of facebook, that my host family from when I studied in Chile is all fine. and fortunately, it looks like the tsunami warnings/evacuations are being canceled, so thank whatever deity you prefer for that :-)
