I had all sorts of plans to watch Supernatural tonight, but then I looked at the clock and realised that when I wasn't looking, time had advanced from one o'clock to three. Television is being postponed for sleep! I have to catch a bus at ten fifteen tomorrow morning, which means a twenty-minute walk beforehand. I cannot get that driver's licence

Oh, and you're not allowed to write fusion fic with Marvels Project.

Oh, I know! this will be year five and I've yet to actually finish the story, regardless of winning. >.>
I generally try to have a basic idea of the story premise when I go in. Then I know where I'm going and how I'll get there--even if it's really vague. But having a structure, even a vague one, really helps me keep going.
I've never written actual fanfic for nano, though year 2 I wrote a story where the main characters were all original and there were a bunch of fanfic side characters, which was kind of fun. Unfortunately, that was the year I went into the month with no plans whatsoever and so the story was awful. I won, but the last half of the month was just no fun because I had no idea where to go and so every tenth word made sense but nothing else did. The story went in the trash because I never wanted to think about it ever again.
I like writing original stuff for Nano, though, just because it helps me further the issues I have with writing (plotting, mainly. >.>).

I don't think I'd do fanfiction for NaNo. This is mostly because I cheat on my wordcount by way of lengthy backstory, but also because seeing who your characters become is part of the fun.
I prepare for NaNo by panicking, buying tea, and writing down what I know is going to happen to reassure myself. I outline and all. And I write profiles. Sometimes I do research ahead of time to save some time during. My pre-NaNo ritual does involve writing out every daily word goal so I can see if I'm on track and cross them out in a self-satisfied fashion.

but if i would participate, i could imagine writing fanfic for it - it's perhaps even likelier than writing original fiction. it's been a while since i've written original fiction that hasn't been a school assignment or a birthday present, and writing any original fiction over 10,000 words has always been a big epic fail for me.
