Activity, Basics and Canines

Today was the first day both girls were essentially normal and their appetites stepped up. MiniPlu is still not quite all the way back, but good enough for us to hit the public library this morning, the pool this afternoon, and the annual staff "welcome-back" barbecue/picnic at the community college this evening. I also managed to tick them both ( Read more... )

I find it hilarious, in a way, that her introduction to wizard rock is what led to the chat (and no, I haven't forgotten the compilation I promised to send to you. I plan to get it burned this weekend.)

The chats get more comprehensive as they get older. I am contemplating the necessity of having a conversation with my daughters regarding aspects of sexuality that my mother never covered with me. As in, the necessity of protection when you are, uh, orally involved. To the best of my knowledge it would (still) be entirely theoretical at this point. But Fiona is 17, and yeah, that's a little tidbit of information that a lot of parents miss.

Am not particularly looking forward to holding that conversation.

Hee! Yep, it's from the Christmas wrock compilation, the one where Draco is telling Voldemort that all he wants for Christmas is for Voldemort to "make HP disappear". And includes the litany of things he doesn't want, such as "don't want Pansy Parkinson to let me get to third". :D (One of our favorite songs, btw - it was a challenge to memorize that list!) And we look forward to the compilation! Anything I can send you in return?

I don't think I EVER got a talk about, um, oral involvement, whatsoever. But I snuck out several of my mother's books as a teenager, including "Our Bodies, Ourselves" and some on sex therapy (my mom was a marriage and family counselor for a while) which included pictures and such.

Good luck with the convo, whenever you have it.

We haven't had The Talk yet with L, or, at lest not with tht focus. I explained where babies come from a couple of years ago, when she asked, but focusing more on the sperm + eggs and DNA and fetal development aspect of it (since that's where her questions were coming from) and less on the sex. A lot of that must've been way over her head at the time, anyway. I should probably see how many copies of this book our library has, as I definitely think a book-aided discussion would work better. The puberty one, too, though I think I probably have covered a lot of it.

I've told both girls in vague terms that babies are made with bits from both the man and the woman, and that thus both are required to make a baby, but left the HOW completely unspoken. MiniPlu is glorifying in the fact that she's allowed to get the details and Two isn't (yet). :P

The puberty one might be good for L, even if she has most of the facts, only because the book talks to the kids directly, and just kind of turns the whole thing into a manageable topic, at their level. (Not to say that you haven't made it at her level but, well - if you can find the book, you'll see what I mean. It's cute.)

Oh, 'the talk', huh? :D I don't envy you that task - I like to think that I will do a good job when it's eventually my turn, but who knows. It sounds like it went pretty well, though!

So far, so good, but even though I willingly gave her some of the information, it's still a bit weird to be giving it to an 8-year-old - and to be doing something so, well, parental. :D
