The restaurant one was really hard for me as well!

Argh -that kind of thing - not taking responsibility - even for things that are seriously no big deal - but instead INSISTING on claiming that it cannot possibly be true - when faced with incontrovertible facts - I cannot fathom how that logic works and it baffles me!

And then he complains that nobody believes him when he says he didn't do something. Because sometimes it's true - he DIDN'T do it. But because of the chronic lying/inability to be responsible, people tend not to believe his denials and he gets mad. :P

Ahhh, I LOVED The House With a Clock In Its Walls as both a kid and an adult--I'm so sorry you didn't enjoy it! I always thought that Tarby did sort of like Lewis, but like a lot of popular kids he didn't want to mess up his own social standing by being associated with someone as unpopular as Lewis was. It was one thing while his arm was broken and he couldn't play sports, but as soon as he could, he didn't have much use for Lewis anymore. Also the reason the Izards didn't have the clock go off immediately was because Selenna Izard died while they were making it and Isaac didn't have enough power on his own to wind and set it--that's why the semi-resurrected Mrs Izard had Hammerhandle break into Jonathan and Lewis's house to steal the key for her.
