Totally random bits and pieces

Fully recovered from whatever-it-was on Sun night. Honestly, I was pretty much recovered at the point that I posted about it; I ate a little bit carefully on Mon and turned down subbing for PREP, just in case, but everything was fine. Today I ran and mowed the lawn and had ice cream, so - clearly, I'm fine. (Although NOW I have menstrual cramps. ( Read more... )

MiniPlu conceded it wasn't as bad as it could have been, but she was still mortified to have to walk past the group of football players who were hanging around the bike rack, with her uncool bike and parentally-required helmet. I confess, I do not understand this. If she wanted to be "in" with the football players, I would TOTALLY get it. But she doesn't like football, doesn't want to be friends with them, and, heck, doesn't even know most of them. So why the heck does it MATTER?? I asked if any of her friends had seen her, or given her a hard time, or remarked on it in any way, and she said no. Isn't that what should matter most?

Probably, it matters because they are either hassling her, or she is afraid they will hassle her. Regardless of whether she likes them or not, they have the power to make her life miserable right now. (Usually in ways that are not actionable by adults -- adolescents are masters at saying hurtful and humiliating things that are nonetheless plausibly deniable, and in some cases -- particularly if it's a ( ... )

She says they weren't hassling her (I asked). I'm not sure about the latter - I should ask about that. I got the impression it was just the idea that said football players would have seen her being Uncool, and that even if they did nothing negative, that would still be humiliating. Sigh. I just wish she didn't spend so much time worrying about what other people think. I know some of that is the age, but still - there are people who matter, and there are people who really, really don't. :P And yes, as a former jr high bullying victim, I know how mean kids can be ( ... )

I'm not sure MiniPlu believes ANYONE really likes her for her. I think she feels she needs to be "on" all the time. I also think that part of this is because she can be incredibly judgey, herself (so, like, even if it's not a deal-breaker or anything, she's going to notice if a friend's nails didn't turn out very well), so she therefore assumes that everyone else is just as judgey. And maybe they are, but I think it's just as hard for her to imagine that they're not, as it is for me to imagine that they all ARE.

But I do thank you for your perspective. You're not the only one who thinks I'm in the wrong, and it's good to hear from other adult viewpoints. :)

I'm not going to bother asking a doctor, not unless it becomes a recurring thing. For now, I'm just going to assume that, instead of a 24-hour bug, I had a 1-hour bug. :P

Hi! Just wanted to mention an important point about the Boxtrolls. The movie is based (loosely, one might say) on the book, "Here Be Monsters! (The Ratbridge Chronicles), http://www.amazon.com/Here-Be-Monsters-Ratbridge-Chronicles/dp/1481427628/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8, by Alan Snow. I hated to see credit for the original idea not recognized. I read this book and saw the movie. Pretty different - except the movie used the idea of Boxtrolls. Enjoyed both, though I wouldn't consider either a particular favorite. :)

Yay, very glad the scary thing from dinner was so very temporary and you're feeling fine! And that you all got make-up ice cream to round off the anniversary festivities ( ... )

I remember being picked on in junior high for not wearing trendy clothing - and while I hated it, and was afraid of meeting those kids again in high school (at which point, they'd lost interest and it was a non-issue), it still didn't make me want to change how I acted (or dressed) in the slightest.

Apparently my friend syntonic_comma is also an ISTJ (computer programmer). Funny that you and I are so compatible in a lot of ways, despite having so many M-B differences. ;) (I'm kind of borderline E/I.)

No worries! And speaking of late - I've mailed you a Halloween card but, knowing the post, it probably won't get to you until American Thanksgiving. :-P Maybe I should put your Christmas card in the mail now!
