The concept of "pure"

Nov 21, 2014 12:50

Hey, remember this post? With all the media attention recently on the Duggars and how they're not allowed to even so much as kiss, much less give regular hugs before marriage, plus some other comments I've seen recently about women who are proud to say they "saved themselves" for marriage, it just made me wonder: WHY do we put so much attention ( Read more... )

you had 4.5 partners?
who was the 0.5 partner? :-)

you could also add Bonobos to your list of examples of strange attitudes towards sex. They have sexual intercourse for solving conflicts in their group, same sex and other.
Go figure, you have an argument with a friend or a lady waiting next in line for her turn at the supermarket, or with a neighbour, and as a solution, you have sex with them. Tension relief and conflict-solving. :-D

In need of a signpost.. Kvothe?

I assume your 0.5 partner was oral/hand no vaginal penetration? So sex, but not full on missionary sex?

There is also the walking marriages of the Mosuo - I think in China or Tibet? I saw a program on them and it was fascinating to me that the culture grew into what it is (and that it continues). They have a very practical view of sex and family, and procreation is to continue the family.

I think it has to do with ownership (mostly ownership of women) that may or may not trace back to the biological urge to make sure your genes get carried on to the next generation. Women are supposed to wait until marriage so they can wholly belong to their husbands. Men are told to wait until marriage, but most of the time I don't think anyone really expects them to.

Just gonna throw this in: because patriarchy. Girls have to be pure because it makes men feel best to be the first, to seem knowledgeable rather than clumsy, to give them a feeling of having the uper hand. A girl who might know sex better than a guy, why she'd be in a position to judge him (literally and figuratively) - his performance and his equipment. I think it's something that most men CANNOT deal with, and aren't taught, which is obviously just another negative effect of the patriarchy. Thus, if girl don't know what's coming, don't know by experience how things are supposed to go, the man is free of judgement and is given the same freedom he has in other areas: he's in a position of power over the girl, she can't laugh because she doesn't know better ( ... )
