I have recently acquired a research paper published by the Royal Marines Historical Society, entitled Marines of the First Fleet, which is a collection of excerpts from the diaries of three Marines with the first convict fleet sailing to New South Wales in 1788. That is so awesome! Thanks for the info! I guess it wouldn't be such a good idea for the marines and sailors to bond over masculine rounds of sadomasochism when it was the marines who would be tasked with protecting the officers if there was ever a mutiny.
