Crimean photographs

In helping someone research the origins of a family photograph, I stumbled upon this page - but be warned, it's very image-heavy. It's not strictly AoS (there are a couple photos of a ship) and is just outside the community's established time period, but I found it utterly fascinating.

It's a shame cameras weren't around forty years earlier...

army, photos, item of interest

Ooh these are amazing! I know zilch about the Crimean War but I was enthralled by these :) Thanks for posting.

Aren't they? My knowledge of Crimea is vague at best, but it's still interesting to get a glimpse of that era in this medium. Plus, even in the 1850s, some things still look familiar.

You're welcome!

I find photographs from this period fascinating. As you said above, it's a shame cameras weren't around just a little earlier.

Incidentally nodbear and I are doing some research on the 3rd Earl Cadogan who started his naval career as a Boy, First Class on HMS Indefatigable. One of the 3rd Earl's sons, also George, served in the Crimean war during which time he painted a series of water colours which have been published under the title Cadogan's Crimea. You can see a few of them here.
