Y'all voted and the results are in: here's a pencil portrait of Emma Stone, with step-by-step photos under the cut! Perhaps it will make you feel less like a cheat if you knew that some of the old masters painters used grids to do their work, too. It's a tool of the trade. You're not cheating. Not everyone is capable of using a grid well and having their work turn out good. :)

and that's nice to hear- i'm always just blown away when i see people start in on a portrait just in the middle of the paper with no prep and have everything look accurate.

That's an ability you can gain doing a few drawing exercises regularly. I've learned to be able to do both grid & freehand pretty well. I need more practice, however.
1. Draw the skull from different angles and soon you'll know when your face drawing is wonky.
2. Draw from life or at least statues. Check the Dr. Sketchy website for live model events in your city for life drawing practice.
3. If you work from photos then set a timer for 5 minutes and see how much you can accomplish in that time. Do it over and over. This trains your eye to grab the general shapes first and the lights and darks: which is what all drawings are. Lines can be implied with shadows and light. You van use a timer to practice drawing anything, actually.
I have some work posted in my LJ under art, painting and drawing tags, if you're interested.
