Were it any other time, they wouldn't have to hide, wouldn't have to sneak around corners and snog in broom cupboards, Rose's back flush with the wall, Scorpius red to his toes. Were they any other people, they wouldn't have to lie and evade their parents, wouldn't have to come up with excuses, wouldn't have to pretend. Wouldn't keep pretending.
But as it is they are products of an era, children of a war. Every day is a matter of picking sides and choosing lines to cross and battling odds.
"I love you," Scorpius whispers, his breath uneven. He buries his face in Rose's hair; his lips skim her neck.
And as she is the honest one here, the realist, she shuts her eyes and murmurs, "You know this won't last, right?"
But for this moment, all of those sides and lines and odds don't matter. "I don't care," he says, and for the moment, neither does she.
