A/N 2: Please be kind. I haven't written anything for a good... oh.... 13-14 years. It's my first Doctor Who fic. Be kind.... please. ;)
As she woke up, the first thing she saw was the blaring light that spread through the room. It almost felt hot, it was so bright. She blinked a few times to get used to the brightness and glare that was surrounding her. She looked over at where the light was assaulting her. What she saw surprised her. A beautiful window with white and blue flowing curtains.
Donna Noble had no idea where she was, or even how she got there. She was dazed and confused and hurt over most of her body. Slowly the realization came over her that someone was holding her hand. She looked over and saw the man that sat beside her. He looked completely exhausted, despite his sleeping state. Around the brightness she could barely make out his face.
"Doctor," she rasped out, flinching at the sound of her own voice.
The Doctor suddenly jerked causing Donna to jump in shock.
"Wha...," the Doctor started to say, then noticed that Donna was awake. "Donna! You're awake!" He said with surprise.
With the pain in her throat, all she could do was give him a small smile.
"Do you need anything? I'll get the doctor," he said, starting to get up, then amended, "The medical doctor. Not me. There being two of me, that would be ridiculous."
He seemed very nervous for some reason. Donna shook her head at him and squeezed his hand tighter causing him to stop mid-stand and sit back down and give her his full attention.
"Just...," she tried her voice again, cleared her throat and tried to speak a little bit louder. "Just, tell me what happened."
The Doctor held her hand in both of his as he leaned closer to her. "You don't remember?" He looked so concerned at that moment. Then even more concerned when Donna answered.
"No."
"Do you remember anything at all?" he asked.
She thought for a moment. What was the last thing she remembered? She closed her eyes to try to remember. She remembered the TARDIS. Flashes of the TARDIS in different states. In an open field surrounded by some yellow-orange grass. It was sunny and she felt happy. Then at night, blue against dark blue skies filled with diamonds with a little puff of grey cloud passing by. She remembered him. The Doctor was next to her. For once he looked relaxed and happy. They watched as what looked like hundreds of falling stars fell all around them. He grinned and she giggled. They were happy. He was saying something to her, but what was it? It was something important. Why couldn't she remember?
Then she remembered shouting. The TARDIS was surrounded by fire. He was running towards her, yelling her name, followed by some humanoids. She remembered facing him and saying, "I'm sorry." And she genuinely was. But why? He then started screaming, what Donna could have sworn was the word, "No", but she couldn't hear anything. The last thing she saw was the humanoids holding him back as he tried to go to her, reach for her. He looked so desperate to get to her. Then darkness. Nothing. She remembered nothing after that.
But that memory, the look of such anguish on the Doctor's face. So much pain after seeing so much happiness, it upset her. More than not being able to remember what happened to her. This wonderful man, who has not only saved her life, but the lives of everyone on her planet, and even saved the universe God knows how many times, should never have such a look of anguish on his face.
The tears started to trickle down her face.
"It's okay," he said. "It's okay that you can't remember. It's not important. What's important is that we're here, and you're safe. And awake."
She smiled at the Doctor sadly and wished she could voice exactly why she was crying. She wished she could tell him just how sorry she was for being the one to cause so much pain in him. She wished she could fix it in some way.
A door that Donna hadn't noticed was there before opened. A tall man with light blue skin and what looked like a doctor’s coat walked into the room holding a, what looked to Donna like a plastic, clear pad. It almost looked like something out of 'Star Trek'.
The stranger stopped about a foot into the room and looked up. "Oh. Hello, Mrs. Noble. How long have you been awake?"
"Just a couple of minutes," the Doctor answered for her. "I was about to come get you, Dr. Ke'Tek."
Dr. Ke'Tek nodded at the Doctor and proceeded to walk towards Donna. He checked something above her head and asked, "How are you feeling, Mrs. Noble?"
Donna tried to clear her throat before speaking, but it was like sandpaper. She did her best to answer the doctor, but all that came out was, “‘m hurting."
"That's to be expected. You've been through a lot," Dr. Ke'Tek said.
The Doctor sat beside her on the bed and tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. "Is there anything you can give her for the pain?"
"Let me run a scan on her first, to make sure her body can handle such things." Dr. Ke'Tek pushed a button above Donna's head again. This time a reddish-pink light glowed around her body. She looked at the Doctor, alarmed, and squeezed his hand.
"It's okay. It's just a scanner," he told her, "It's just an easy way to examine you."
He smiled reassuringly at her, and she relaxed knowing he wouldn't willingly let anything happen to her.
The light faded and Dr. Ke'Tek pressed a couple more buttons above Donna's head. "Well, besides some acute anxiety, which is understandable," Dr. Ke'Tek smiled down at Donna, "She seems to be healing better than expected."
The Doctor grinned down at her, and she gave him a tired smile back.
Dr. Ke'Tek pressed something by the door and a voice filtered the room. Donna assumed it was some sort of call button he pressed.
"May I help you?" came the female voice over the com. She sounded professional, but friendly and it put Donna at ease a little bit.
"Ken'Ya, would you please meet me in my office? I'm going to prescribe Mrs. Noble some pain medications. Oh and please bring her some water."
"Yes, Doctor," the voice over the intercom said before a small 'beep' sounded.
"Doctor Noble," Dr. Ke'Tek began, "Make sure she drinks plenty of water. Her body needs it. She's slightly dehydrated."
"I will," the Doctor answered, not bothering to correct the medical doctor.
Dr. Ke'Tek left the room, leaving the Doctor and Donna on their own again.
Donna looked at the Doctor expectantly. To him, she looked like she had a question but was unsure of how to ask it. So he started for her.
"You've been in very good hands here, Donna. After everything you did for these people, it's the least they could do for you. Giving you the best health care, I mean."
Donna took a moment to think about what the Doctor told her. What could she have possibly done to make these people feel as though they owe her? She felt as though there was a very important part of her life that was missing. "But... Doctor, what exactly is it that I did for these people?"
The Doctor gently took one of Donna's hands into both of his and gave her his best sincere, but sad, smile. "Oh, Donna Noble, you are the most brilliant woman in all the universe. Have I ever told you just how brilliant and special you really are?"
She knew what he was doing. She had to remember it on her own.
Donna glared at him the best she could in her tired and hurting state. "You're not going to tell me, are you?"
The Doctor just grinned at her for a moment. "Not a chance."
She just sighed, too tired to argue with him.
"Get some sleep, Donna. You need your rest." The Doctor leaned over and kissed Donna on the forehead.
The last thing Donna remembered before falling completely asleep was the Doctor telling her not to worry, that he would never leave her again.
Hope you Enjoyed it! Let me know what you thought.
