An old photograph, probably from the 1880s, showing Kars castle andthe old part of the town within the remains of the medieval city walls.

A photograph from before 1918 showing the Holy Apostles church, then in use as a Russian Orthodox church, and the belltower that was demolished in 1960.

The Holy Apostles church, a photograph in the 1951 book 'Within The Taurus' by David Balfour.

A Russian-period photograph of the Greek Orthodox church in Kars. It was demolished in 1957 and a mosque now occupies the site.

Another photograph showing the Greek Orthodox church in Kars, this one is taken probably in the 1930s.

An ornate building constructed in 1883. In 1903 an upper story was added. In 1920, after the Turkish capture of Kars, this building became the Town Hall.

A Russian military procession passing the same building.

The town's Russian Orthodox cathedral. It still survives, minus its domes. After 1920 it was used as a school gymnasium. In 1985 it was converted into a mosque. In the foreground is a war memorial, now destroyed.

Another view of the Russian Orthodox cathedral in Kars.

Photograph from 1913 of a ceremonial military procession at the war memorial. The monument is destroyed and a sports stadium is now located on the site.
